A 4,000 nit display for windows that face daylight

The LG 49XS4J is a 49-inch, 16:9 signage display for glass frontages, where sunlight and reflections weaken standard screens. Its IPS panel is rated at 4,000 nits typical and 3,200 nits minimum, so content stays readable from the pavement and across bright lobbies. The unit has a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, a black bezel of 9 mm at top and bottom and 6.5 mm at the sides, and no touch function.

Readable through polarised sunglasses and changing light

Street-facing screens are often viewed by people wearing polarised sunglasses, which can make the picture disappear. The 49XS4J includes a quarter wave plate (QWP) layer, which the manufacturer specifies to keep the image clear for that viewer. An auto brightness sensor, with an ambient light sensor in the IR receiver, raises output in strong light and lowers it after dark. The panel also offers a 1,300:1 contrast ratio, 3% surface haze and 178-degree viewing angles both horizontally and vertically.

Playing content without a separate media player

The screen runs webOS 4.1 on a quad core SoC with 16GB of internal eMMC storage, so basic playback does not need an external player. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support wireless content distribution and firmware updates, and an RJ45 LAN port is provided for wired networks. SuperSign CMS, SuperSign Control+ and Connected Care are listed as compatible, and Control Manager lets staff check and adjust units from a phone or PC on the network. The connections include two HDMI inputs (HDCP 1.4), one DisplayPort input and output, RS-232C in and out, an IR input and a USB 2.0 Type A port. Video Tag supports four tags, and PBP and PIP modes are available.

Where it fits in Qatar

• A pharmacy or bank branch on a sunlit street front in Doha, showing offers or wayfinding through the glass.
• A hotel entrance in Lusail or West Bay, where the on-screen menu can be set to Arabic for guests and staff.
• A retail unit in a mall or on a commercial street in Al Sadd, where the window display must stay visible in daylight.

What to plan before installation

Heat is the main planning point. The manufacturer rates operation at 0°C to 40°C without direct sunlight and 0°C to 30°C with direct sunlight, with humidity between 10 and 80 percent. Qatar summer temperatures outdoors often pass 45°C, so a west-facing window needs shading, a conditioned room and airflow around the unit. The data sheet does not list an outdoor or weather rating, so confirm the site with the SmartRooms Qatar team before ordering. Typical power use is 345 W on full white and 141 W under IEC 62087 conditions, with a 375 W maximum and 0.5 W standby. Typical heat output is 1,177 BTU per hour, which should be added to the room cooling load. The power supply is rated 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, a range that includes Qatar's 240 V, 50 Hz mains.

The head weighs 20.8 kg and the packed weight is 25.3 kg, with a VESA interface of 600 x 400 mm. Optional WM-L640V (landscape) and WM-P640V (portrait) wall mounts are available. Check the wall or mullion structure and plan cable routes before mounting, and a site survey helps confirm fixing points. The screen measures 1,092.7 x 626.4 x 83.5 mm, and the carton is 1,181 x 725 x 212 mm, so confirm access through the building entrance.
