LG 98UM5K 98-inch UHD Large Screen Signage Display

Overview

The LG 98UM5K is a 98-inch UHD signage display with a 3840 x 2160 panel, 500 nit typical brightness and webOS 6.0 on board. It has built-in 10 W speakers, Wi-Fi, three HDMI inputs, DisplayPort and RS232C control, so it can run as a standalone promotion screen or join a larger network. It suits Qatari boardrooms, lobbies, airports and malls that need a large, regularly updated message wall.

What the LG 98UM5K is built to do

The LG 98UM5K is a 98-inch large-format display for organisations that need one very large screen for signage, wayfinding and internal communication. Its 3840 x 2160 UHD panel has four times the pixels of Full HD, so text and fine graphics stay sharp when people stand close to a wall-mounted screen. The panel is rated at 500 nit typical brightness, a level the manufacturer positions for indoor use in meeting rooms, airports, retail outlets and shopping malls.

Picture and panel figures worth checking

The 98UM5K uses a 16:9 direct-lit panel with a 60Hz refresh rate. Contrast is listed at 1,200:1, with a dynamic contrast figure of 200,000:1, and colour gamut at DCI-P3 88% or more. Colour depth is 8-bit with FRC, giving 1.07 billion colours, and grey-to-grey response time is 8 ms. Viewing angle is rated 178 x 178 degrees, and the surface has a 25% haze treatment. The panel can be set to portrait or landscape, and it is rated for 16 hours a day, seven days a week.

Connectivity, control and content management

The rear panel offers three HDMI inputs, one DisplayPort input, one DVI-D input, an audio input, an RJ45 LAN port, an IR input and a USB 2.0 Type A port. HDMI1 and HDMI2 support HDCP 2.2, which matters for protected sources, while HDMI3 supports HDCP 1.4. One HDMI output and a daisy-chain function pass a source to the next screen, and RS232C ports on both input and output allow serial control from a central controller. The screen runs webOS 6.0 with built-in Wi-Fi and 16GB of internal memory, and it works with SuperSign CMS, SuperSign Cloud and Mobile CMS. There is no touch function, so this is a display for viewing rather than interaction.

Where it fits in Qatar

Hotel or serviced apartment lobby in West Bay or The Pearl: a large welcome and wayfinding screen in an air-conditioned lobby, updated centrally from the front desk.
Executive boardroom in Doha: a 98-inch screen for presenting to teams in Doha and abroad, with UHD detail for spreadsheets and drawings.
Mall or retail atrium in Al Sadd or Lusail: promotional loops, with brightness checked against the lighting in the space before mounting.
Government or industrial reception: visitor and safety messaging in an office in the Industrial Area or a site building in Mesaieed.

What to plan before you order

At 2198 x 1253 x 79.5 mm, the head weighs 78 kg and the packed unit weighs 105 kg, so the wall structure and mounting hardware must be rated for that load. The VESA pattern is 800 x 400, and the manufacturer advises mounting close to the wall. A free site survey from SmartRooms Qatar lets our team check wall construction, access routes and cable runs before delivery. The operating range is 0 to 40 °C at 10 to 80% humidity, while Qatar summers can exceed 45 °C, so plan an air-conditioned location away from direct sun and ask us to review hot spots. Power input is AC 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz, with typical consumption of 530 W and maximum of 590 W. Smart energy saving lists 371 W. Schools and government bodies can order several units through purchase orders (LPOs) or tenders, and products are covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Questions about 98UM5K

Who is the LG 98UM5K designed for?

The 98UM5K suits organisations that need one very large screen for indoor signage, such as a hotel lobby in West Bay, a mall atrium or a corporate reception. Its 98-inch 3840 x 2160 panel and 500 nit typical brightness make it a strong choice for messages that must be read from several metres away. It is a display for viewing rather than touch, because the data lists no touch function.

What resolution and brightness does the 98UM5K deliver?

The panel has a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 (UHD) and a typical brightness of 500 nit. Contrast is listed at 1,200:1, colour gamut at DCI-P3 88% or more, and viewing angle at 178 x 178 degrees. The brightness rating is for indoor displays, so compare the 500 nit figure with the light level at the mounting point before you commit.

Which inputs and outputs does the 98UM5K have?

It has three HDMI inputs, with HDMI1 and HDMI2 supporting HDCP 2.2 and HDMI3 supporting HDCP 1.4. Other inputs are one DisplayPort, one DVI-D, an audio input, an RJ45 LAN port, an IR input and a USB 2.0 Type A port. There is one HDMI output and a daisy-chain function that passes a source to the next screen.

Can the 98UM5K run in portrait orientation?

Yes, the data lists portrait and landscape orientation as supported. A portrait layout suits a vertical menu, a directory or a wayfinding column in a corridor of an office tower or hospital in Doha, while landscape suits a lobby or meeting room wall. Choose the orientation before fixing the bracket, and confirm the 800 x 400 VESA pattern with the mounting supplier.

Does the screen have built-in speakers?

Yes, it has two built-in speakers rated at 10 W each, with a maximum of 10 W per channel left and right. They can play announcements and short audio loops in a lobby or exhibition area without external speakers. For a large lecture hall or auditorium, check whether external audio is needed before you place the order.

Can the 98UM5K be installed near a window in Doha's summer heat?

The operating temperature range is 0 to 40 °C with 10 to 80% humidity, and Qatar summers can go above 45 °C. Install it in an air-conditioned room, away from direct sunlight and glare from windows, and ask the SmartRooms Qatar team to review the room layout before mounting. The built-in temperature sensor reports conditions but does not replace suitable room cooling.

How heavy is the 98UM5K and what does the wall need?

The head weighs 78 kg and the packed unit weighs 105 kg, with monitor dimensions of 2198 x 1253 x 79.5 mm. The VESA mount pattern is 800 x 400. The manufacturer advises mounting close to the wall. A free site survey from SmartRooms Qatar lets us check wall construction, lift access and cable routes before delivery.

What power does the 98UM5K need in Qatar?

The power supply is listed as AC 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz, a range that covers Qatar's 240 V mains. Typical consumption is 530 W and maximum is 590 W. With smart energy saving, typical consumption falls to 371 W. Standby and power-off are each rated at 0.5 W. Ask your electrical contractor to confirm a suitable socket at the mounting point.

Which software manages the 98UM5K across several sites?

The data lists compatibility with SuperSign CMS, SuperSign Control, SuperSign WB, SuperSign Cloud, Mobile CMS and Connected Care. Local content scheduling, group manager, fail over and Wake on LAN support network management. For a multi-site estate such as schools or branch offices across Doha and Al Khor, confirm the software package your team needs with SmartRooms Qatar when you request a quote.

Does the 98UM5K work with Crestron or building control systems?

The data lists Crestron Inside and Cisco certification, along with SNMP support, RS232C control and LAN network control. These features support integration with AV control systems in a boardroom or government building. Confirm the exact control protocol your system needs with the SmartRooms Qatar team before ordering.

Can a school or ministry buy the 98UM5K through an LPO or tender?

Yes. SmartRooms Qatar supplies against purchase orders (LPOs) and government tenders, including Monaqasat, and accepts payment by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. For a school or ministry buying several 98-inch screens, send the room list and mounting walls so the quotation covers supply, delivery to all eight municipalities and professional installation. Products are covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
