Overview

The Sony BRC-AM7 is a compact remote PTZ camera with a 1.0-type sensor, 4K 60p output and a 20x optical zoom. Built-in AI auto framing follows presenters and can frame up to eight people, and it runs from DC 12 V or PoE++. It suits lecture halls, boardrooms and sports halls in Qatar that need a camera without a dedicated operator.

What the BRC-AM7 is and where it fits

The Sony BRC-AM7 is a compact remote PTZ camera with an integrated lens, designed for organisations that want a high-quality picture without a camera operator in the room. A 1.0-type Exmor RS sensor with approximately 14.0 million effective pixels feeds a 20x optical zoom, and built-in AI analytics keep people in frame as they move. At approximately 3.5 kg and 168.7 × 225.2 × 192.3 mm, it can be ceiling-mounted in spaces where a larger camera would not fit.

Image quality and zoom for large rooms

Output runs up to 3840 x 2160 at 59.94p and 50p, so the picture holds up on large displays and in live streams. The lens covers a 24 to 480 mm equivalent range, letting one camera take a wide view of a whole room and a close view of a single speaker. Clear Image Zoom adds 30x in 4K and 40x in Full HD. A built-in electronic variable ND filter, adjustable from 1/4 to 1/128, keeps exposure steady when daylight through windows or stage lighting changes, without manual iris changes. Base looks including ITU709, 709tone and S-Log3 help match this camera to other cameras in the room.

Automatic framing and quiet, precise movement

The AI framing can follow one presenter or frame up to eight people, with one primary subject and secondary subjects chosen by their proximity to that subject. Face Registration stores the primary subject so the camera can re-acquire them after tracking is lost. Tracking Range confines framing to one predefined area, which is useful when only part of a room should be shown. Lead Room Effect adds space in the direction a subject is looking, with three adjustment levels. The direct drive motors cover pan and tilt speeds from 0.004 to 180 degrees per second and are rated NC25 or lower under Sony's test conditions, which suits ceremonies and concerts.

For indoor sport, Ball Sports (Basketball) mode from firmware 3.0 follows the ball and players from an overview angle. It is designed for indoor 5v5 games, must be installed at the centre of the court along the sideline, needs an official ball, and cannot run at the same time as Person Framing.

Connectivity, control and power

  • Video outputs: 12G-SDI on a BNC output, 3G-SDI for monitoring, HDMI Type A and an SFP+ optical port.
  • Audio: two 3-pin XLR inputs and a 3.5 mm stereo input.
  • Control and IP: 1000BASE-T RJ-45 LAN, VISCA over IP, S700PTP, free-d tracking data and NDI HX pre-installed.
  • Power: DC 12 V through a 4-pin XLR input, or PoE++ under IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8.

What to plan before ordering

  • The operating range is 0 °C to 40 °C. Qatar's summer heat can exceed 45 °C, so confirm the installation environment and cooling first.
  • Ceiling mounting uses the supplied ceiling bracket, with a mountable angle of up to ±15 degrees.
  • Internal recording and playback are not available when powered by PoE++.
  • Recording uses two slots that accept CFexpress Type A and SDXC cards. CFexpress Type B is not supported.

In practice, a university lecture theatre in Education City could ceiling-mount one BRC-AM7 at the back of the room to follow the lecturer and stream to remote students. A boardroom in West Bay could use it to frame the chair and several speakers in a hybrid meeting with teams abroad. A school sports hall in Al Rayyan could use Ball Sports mode for indoor basketball. Every site begins with a free site survey, so bracket position, cabling and power are settled before installation.

Questions about BRC-AM7

What is the Sony BRC-AM7 designed for?
The BRC-AM7 is a remote PTZ camera for rooms that need a broadcast-style picture without a camera operator. It combines a 20x optical zoom with AI auto framing, so one unit can follow a lecturer or presenter. Typical uses include lecture theatres, boardrooms, studios and event spaces where a single camera must cover the whole room and stream the result.
What video resolutions and frame rates can it output?
The camera outputs up to 3840 x 2160 at 59.94p and 50p, with 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720 options, through 12G-SDI, HDMI and the SFP+ optical port. It can record 4K up to 120p for slow motion, but 4K 120p is recording only and needs additional equipment to output. Confirm the output format your control room uses before requesting a quote.
How much zoom does the lens provide?
The integrated lens offers 20x optical zoom, a 24 to 480 mm equivalent focal range on a 35 mm basis, and a maximum aperture of F2.8 to F4.5. Clear Image Zoom adds 30x in 4K and 40x in Full HD. A camera mounted at the back of a lecture theatre can frame the full room and then zoom in on the lectern without moving the mount. Digital zoom is not offered.
Can it follow one presenter without an operator?
Yes. PTZ auto framing tracks a person using AI analytics, and Face Registration lets you register the primary presenter so the camera can re-acquire them after tracking is lost. Tracking Range limits framing to one predefined area, which is useful when only part of a room should be shown. Lighting and seating layout affect tracking, so review them during the site survey.
Can it frame several people at the same time?
Multi-person Framing tracks up to eight people, with one primary subject and secondary subjects selected by their proximity to that subject. It suits panel discussions and boardroom meetings in Doha where a chair and several speakers sit at a long table. Pan, tilt and zoom adjust automatically so the selected people stay in the picture.
Does it support basketball games in a school sports hall?
Yes, with firmware 3.0 or later, Ball Sports (Basketball) mode frames indoor 5v5 games from an overview angle, following the ball and the players. The unit must be mounted at the centre of the court along the sideline, and an official ball is required. It does not track a specific player holding the ball and cannot run alongside Person Framing. It suits school sports halls in Al Rayyan or Doha.
How quiet is the camera during ceremonies or concerts?
The direct drive system is rated NC25 or lower under Sony's measurement conditions, and pan and tilt speeds range from 0.004 to 180 degrees per second. That makes it suitable for ceremonies, weddings, classical concerts and studio recording where motor noise must stay out of the audio. Check the room's acoustic requirements with your event team before mounting.
Can it operate in Qatar's summer heat, including outdoors?
The operating range is 0 °C to 40 °C, and storage range is -20 °C to +60 °C. Qatar's summer can exceed 45 °C, so the camera should be installed in an air-conditioned space. An outdoor or unventilated enclosure falls outside the stated operating range. Confirm the environment, cooling and cable routes with the SmartRooms Qatar team before you order.
What power does it need, and can it run over the network?
It accepts DC 12 V (11.0 V to 17.0 V) through a 4-pin XLR input, or PoE++ under IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 Class 8. Power consumption is up to 132 W on DC and up to 71.3 W on PoE++. Internal recording and playback are not available when powered by PoE++, so use DC power where recording to card is required. Confirm your power option when requesting a quote.
What storage does it use for recording?
The camera has two memory slots that accept CFexpress Type A cards and UHS-II or UHS-I SDXC cards, allowing simultaneous, relay and proxy recording. CFexpress Type B cards are not supported. Recording formats include XAVC and XAVC S, with LPCM 24-bit, 48 kHz, four-channel audio. Plan card capacity around the length of your recordings.
How does it connect to a video conferencing or streaming setup?
NDI HX is pre-installed, and the camera supports RTMP, RTMPS, SRT and RTSP streaming with IP stream resolutions up to 3840 x 2160. Control is available through VISCA over IP, S700PTP and a browser-based web app, and free-d tracking data can be output for virtual production. A 1000BASE-T RJ-45 LAN port carries this traffic. Have your encoder and control system details ready when you request a quote.
How large is the camera and how should it be mounted?
The camera weighs approximately 3.5 kg and measures 168.7 × 225.2 × 192.3 mm without projecting objects. For ceiling installation, use the supplied ceiling bracket, with a mountable angle of up to ±15 degrees. A 1/4-20 UNC tripod socket is also fitted. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey before fixing, so bracket position, cable runs and access for lifting are checked first.
