Overview

The Sony BRC-X400 is a 4K IP pan-tilt-zoom camera for live production, lecture capture and studio work. Its 1/2.5-type Exmor R sensor outputs 4K at 29.97p and 25p, the lens reaches 30x zoom in 4K, and NDI|HX, RTSP, RTMP and SRT let it feed networked systems. It suits lecture halls, studios and event venues across Doha and Education City. Request a quote.

What the BRC-X400 is and how it is built

The Sony BRC-X400 is a pan-tilt-zoom camera that sends 4K video over an IP network. It pairs a 1/2.5-type Exmor R CMOS sensor with roughly 8.5 million effective pixels and an integrated lens with a focal length of 4.4 mm at wide to 88.0 mm at tele, at F2.0 to F3.8. One camera can run fixed shots, follow presets, or be steered by an operator, which suits rooms where one person needs to cover several positions without a camera crew.

Power and signal can share one cable when the camera is fed by PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), which reduces the cabling an installer must pull through ceilings and trunking. A DC 12 V input with the supplied AC adaptor is also available, and the camera draws 25.5 W at most.

Image and zoom figures that matter in practice

In 4K the lens reaches 30x zoom with Clear Image Zoom. In Full HD, Clear Image Zoom gives 40x, and combining it with Tele Convert Mode extends the HD figure to 80x. The wide end covers an approximate 70 degree horizontal angle, enough to show an entire lecture room or stage from one fixed position. Horizontal resolution is rated at 1700 TV lines in 4K. Minimum illumination is 1.6 lux under Sony's stated conditions (1/30 s, 50 IRE, F2, high sensitivity off), so a dimly lit lecture theatre or controlled studio can still produce usable pictures.

Output options depend on resolution. In 4K the camera provides one HDMI output and one IP streaming output. In HD, 3G-SDI is available alongside HDMI and IP, which helps when a broadcast switcher still runs on SDI. A BNC external sync input (75 ohm) supports multi-camera work, and a front tally lamp shows when the camera is on air.

Streaming, NDI|HX and control options

The camera encodes H.264 and H.265 and supports RTSP, RTMP and SRT. RTMP and SRT require firmware V3.00. Up to three streams can run at once with up to five clients connected, and the bitrate range runs from 512 Kbps to 50 Mbps. Audio is 2-channel AAC with two 3.5 mm microphone or line inputs, and embedded audio is carried on SDI and HDMI.

NDI|HX capability lets the camera join an NDI network, but the NDI|HX licence is sold separately and must be budgeted for. Camera control runs over VISCA RS-422, VISCA over IP and S700PTP, and the camera stores 256 presets over CGI or 100 over VISCA. For virtual sets, the camera can output pan, tilt, zoom and focus tracking data in the free-d protocol, which requires firmware V2.10.

Planning a BRC-X400 installation in Qatar

Consider a lecture hall at a campus in Education City where the camera is ceiling-mounted at the back of the room and linked to a lecture-capture system over IP. Ceiling brackets are supplied, but the mountable angle is less than 15 degrees either side of level, so the position should be surveyed before drilling. A production suite in Msheireb or West Bay may use the camera with an NDI|HX licence to feed a switcher, and a hall in Lusail hosting a town hall may stream to an online platform over RTSP or SRT.

Operating temperature is rated from 0 C to 40 C, which is well below the outdoor summer conditions common in Qatar, where temperatures can pass 45 C. Plan for air-conditioned rooms and confirm the environment with the SmartRooms Qatar team before any outdoor or window-facing installation. Dust storms make the same point for any equipment that is not protected.

Other planning details: the camera body is available in white or black, weighs approximately 1.8 kg, and measures 158.4 x 177.5 x 200.2 mm. The package includes an IR remote commander, two ceiling brackets, a wire rope, an HDMI cable fixing plate and a warranty document, and the camera is covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

SmartRooms Qatar supplies the BRC-X400, delivers to all eight municipalities of Qatar, and can arrange professional installation after a free site survey. Request a quote and we will confirm the licences, firmware and accessories your setup needs, with the quotation usually issued within one working day.

Questions about BRC-X400

Who is the BRC-X400 designed for?
The BRC-X400 suits organisations that need a remotely controlled 4K camera with IP output, such as broadcast and remote on-air studios, sports venues and lecture halls. In Qatar, that often means a university lecture room in Education City that needs one camera to cover the whole room, or a production suite in Msheireb that feeds a switcher over NDI|HX. Request a quote and we will confirm which configuration fits your room.
How much zoom does the BRC-X400 provide?
The lens provides 30x zoom in 4K and 40x in Full HD, both with Clear Image Zoom. Full HD with Clear Image Zoom and Tele Convert Mode reaches 80x. Focal length runs from 4.4 mm at wide to 88.0 mm at tele, with a minimum object distance of 80 mm at wide and 800 mm at tele. In a lecture room, the wide end shows the full room while the telephoto end frames a presenter at the far wall.
What video outputs does it have?
In 4K the camera provides one HDMI output and one IP streaming output. In HD it also offers 3G-SDI alongside HDMI and IP. HDMI can output YCbCr 4:2:2 8-bit or RGB 4:4:4 8-bit, and remote video format switching is supported. If your control room still uses SDI, confirm the signal path with the SmartRooms Qatar team before ordering so that the switcher, cabling and any converters match the camera's outputs.
Is NDI|HX included, and what does it need?
NDI|HX capability is built in, but it needs a licence that is sold separately from the camera. Once licensed, the BRC-X400 can join other NDI-enabled devices on the same network. This suits a production team in Education City or a corporate studio in Lusail that wants to route several cameras, screens and computers without separate video cabling. Ask for the licence to be included in your quotation so the budget reflects the full setup.
How does it perform in dim rooms?
The camera has a minimum illumination of 1.6 lux under Sony's test conditions: 1/30 s shutter, 50 IRE, F2 and high sensitivity off. With high sensitivity on, gain runs up to +48 dB. This suits a dim lecture theatre or a studio with controlled lighting. Auto ICR, visibility enhancer and image stabilisation are also included, but for a room with very low light, a site test using your planned lighting is the best check.
Can it stream directly to an online platform?
Yes. It supports RTSP for viewing and RTMP and SRT for streaming, and RTMP and SRT require firmware V3.00. The camera can run up to three streams with a maximum of five clients, and bitrate ranges from 512 Kbps to 50 Mbps with CBR or VBR selectable. A hall in Lusail hosting a town hall or graduation ceremony can stream over SRT, which is designed to keep video stable on unstable networks. Check the firmware version on site before going live.
Which control protocols does it support?
The camera can be controlled through VISCA over RS-422 (RJ45 in and out), VISCA over IP, S700PTP and CGI, and it ships with an IR remote commander. It stores 256 presets over CGI and 100 over VISCA, and it supports picture freeze preset and PTZ trace memory. A ministry boardroom with an existing control system can use the protocol it already runs, but confirm compatibility with the SmartRooms Qatar team before committing.
How should it be mounted?
It is designed for ceiling mounting, with two ceiling brackets and a wire rope included, and it can also sit on a tripod using its 1/4-20UNC screw hole. The mountable angle is less than 15 degrees, so the mounting surface must be close to level. Pan range is plus or minus 170 degrees and tilt runs from +90 to -20 degrees, so check sightlines across the whole room before drilling. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey for this kind of planning.
What power does it need?
The camera accepts PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) or DC 12 V (10.8 to 13.2 V), and an AC power adaptor is supplied. Maximum power consumption is 25.5 W. Using PoE+ lets you run power and signal on one IP cable, which reduces cabling in a lecture hall or studio. Make sure any PoE switch you plan to use is able to supply PoE+ before installation, and confirm the power arrangement in your quotation.
Can it be used outdoors in Qatar's summer?
The camera is rated for operating temperatures from 0 C to 40 C and storage from -20 C to +60 C. Summer temperatures in Qatar can pass 45 C and dust storms are common, so the BRC-X400 is not suited to unprotected outdoor or window-facing positions. For a stadium or a venue with an open concourse, discuss the conditions at the site with the SmartRooms Qatar team before you request a quote.
Can it feed a virtual studio or AR system?
Yes. The camera outputs real-time pan, tilt, zoom and focus data over IP in the free-d protocol, and this feature requires firmware V2.10. That data lets a virtual set track the camera without a separate tracking system. A production company in Msheireb or Al Sadd building a virtual studio for a corporate event could use it this way. Confirm the firmware version and your render software before purchase.
How do I buy it through SmartRooms Qatar?
Request a quote by sending your room or venue details, the outputs you need and whether you require NDI|HX. SmartRooms Qatar delivers to all eight municipalities of Qatar, arranges professional installation and offers a free site survey. Quotations are usually issued within one working day. We accept purchase orders (LPOs) and government tenders, including Monaqasat, with payment by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. The camera is covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
