Overview

The Sony SRG-X40UH is a remotely controlled 4K PTZ camera built around a 1/2.5-type Exmor R CMOS sensor. It offers 30x zoom in 4K and 40x in FHD using Clear Image Zoom, a horizontal viewing angle of approximately 70 degrees and pan of ±170 degrees. It connects over HDMI or USB and can be powered over a single PoE+ LAN cable, suiting lecture halls, boardrooms and clinics across Qatar.

What the SRG-X40UH is built to do

The Sony SRG-X40UH is a remotely operated PTZ camera for rooms where one person must frame a speaker, a presenter or a demonstration from a distance and send a clean picture to a display, a conferencing system or a recording device. At its centre is a 1/2.5-type Exmor R CMOS sensor with approximately 8.5 million effective pixels. It captures 4K at 29.97p and 25p, and it can also produce a 1080p image that is oversampled from the 4K sensor for sharper HD output.

Zoom, field of view and low-light performance

The optical zoom is 20x, with a lens that runs from a 4.4 mm wide end to an 88.0 mm telephoto end at F2.0 to F3.8. Clear Image Zoom extends the reach to 30x in 4K and 40x in FHD. At the wide end the horizontal viewing angle is approximately 70 degrees, enough to show an entire room. The camera needs only 1.6 lux at 50 IRE with high-sensitivity switched off, and its Day/Night function moves between full colour and black-and-white so that dim meeting rooms stay readable.

Movement, control and cabling

Pan covers ±170 degrees and tilt runs from +90 to -20 degrees. Top pan speed is 300 degrees per second, and a slow mode is available for gentle framing changes during a live session. Sony rates pan and tilt operation noise at NC30 or less under its measurement conditions. Up to 100 presets can be stored through VISCA control. Control runs over VISCA RS-422, VISCA over IP on an RJ-45 port, or the supplied IR remote commander, and power can arrive through a single LAN cable using PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at).

Where it fits in Qatar

  • A university lecture hall in Education City where the lecturer moves across the front of the room, the camera follows a stored preset and the feed goes to the room display through HDMI.
  • A government boardroom in Msheireb or West Bay where officials join meetings with colleagues abroad. The USB Type-C port provides a UVC video source for a laptop or conferencing codec.
  • A hospital or clinic training room in Doha where a demonstration is followed from a fixed ceiling position, so staff do not need to move equipment during the session.

The operating temperature range is 0 °C to 40 °C, so the camera belongs in air-conditioned rooms. External walls, sunlit atriums and unconditioned lobbies can exceed 45 °C during Qatar summers, so they need a different plan or an environment check with the SmartRooms Qatar team before installation.

What to plan before you order

Choose the mount first. The camera can sit on a desk or be fixed to the ceiling with the two supplied ceiling brackets, and the mounting angle must stay within less than ±15 degrees. At roughly 1.6 kg and 158.4 x 177.5 x 200.2 mm, it is compact, but a ceiling position should be checked on site. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey to confirm sight lines, cable routes and the minimum object distance of 80 mm at wide and 800 mm at tele. Power comes from the supplied AC adaptor or a PoE+ port, with a maximum consumption of 25.5 W.

Questions about SRG-X40UH

Who is the Sony SRG-X40UH designed for?
It suits organisations that need one camera to cover a large room with remote framing, such as universities, government meeting rooms, hospitals and training centres. Its 20x optical zoom, approximately 70-degree wide angle and ±170-degree pan let one unit cover a lecture hall or boardroom, while HDMI and USB outputs fit existing AV and conferencing setups in Doha, Lusail and across Qatar.
What is the difference between the 30x 4K zoom and the 40x FHD zoom?
Both figures come from Clear Image Zoom, which enlarges the image digitally on top of the 20x optical zoom. The camera reaches 30x when outputting 4K and 40x in FHD. Choose 4K when your display or conferencing system supports it and fine detail matters, such as speaker features or distant whiteboards. Choose FHD when you need the extra reach with a 1080p output.
Can the camera operate in a hot room in Qatar?
The rated operating temperature is 0 °C to 40 °C, and storage is -20 °C to +60 °C. Install it in an air-conditioned room such as a boardroom or lecture theatre. Avoid external walls, sunlit atriums and unconditioned spaces during summer, when outdoor temperatures in Qatar can exceed 45 °C. If room conditions are unclear, the SmartRooms Qatar team will check them before installation.
Which video outputs does it have?
The camera provides a 4K HDMI output, an HD HDMI output and an HD USB output. The USB Type-C port works as a UVC device (UVC 1.1, MJPEG), so a laptop or conferencing system can receive the picture directly. HDMI colour can be set to YCbCr 4:2:2 8-bit or RGB 4:4:4 8-bit, and the video format can be switched remotely.
Can it be powered over a single network cable?
Yes. The camera supports PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at), carrying power and control on one LAN cable. Its maximum consumption is 25.5 W, so the PoE+ switch port must supply enough power. Alternatively, it runs on the supplied AC adaptor or a DC 12V supply within 10.8 to 13.2 V. Check the switch specification during planning, and ask SmartRooms Qatar to confirm the power plan for your network.
How is it controlled and how many presets can it store?
It stores up to 100 presets under VISCA control and supports two interfaces: VISCA RS-422 on RJ45 in and out ports, and VISCA over IP on an RJ-45 port. An IR remote commander is included for everyday pan, tilt and zoom. Maximum pan speed reaches 300 degrees per second, and a slow mode allows gradual movement during a live session.
Would it suit a university lecture hall in Education City?
Yes, a hall where the lecturer moves across the front area or stage suits this model. The 20x optical zoom and wide angle cover both the presenter and the room, and a stored preset returns the camera to the lectern area from the control device. Mount it at the back of the hall on the supplied brackets, and confirm sight lines and cable routes with a free site survey before ordering several units.
How does it help a boardroom in Msheireb or West Bay that joins meetings with overseas teams?
A boardroom using a conferencing system or laptop can take a clean video feed from the USB Type-C UVC output, while the 4K HDMI output drives a large display in the same room. The ±170-degree pan and +90 to -20-degree tilt let the operator frame each speaker without handling the camera. Sony rates operation noise at NC30 or less, so the camera will not distract participants.
Can a hospital or clinic in Doha use it in a training room?
The manufacturer describes the camera for medical settings, and its remote control means staff do not need to handle equipment during a demonstration. Before choosing a clinical installation, confirm infection-control, lighting and mounting requirements with the facility team. The operating range is 0 °C to 40 °C, so the room must stay within it. Request a quote once these requirements are clear.
Should I mount it on a desk or the ceiling, and how much space does it need?
Both options are supported. The camera can sit on a desk or be fixed to the ceiling with the two supplied brackets, and the mounting angle must stay within less than ±15 degrees. It measures 158.4 x 177.5 x 200.2 mm and weighs approximately 1.6 kg. The minimum object distance is 80 mm at wide and 800 mm at tele, so keep the lens clear of obstructions. A free SmartRooms Qatar site survey confirms the best position.
Can a school order several units on one purchase order?
Yes. SmartRooms Qatar accepts purchase orders (LPOs) and government tenders, and quotations are usually issued within one working day. A school fitting out several classrooms or halls can request one quotation covering multiple Sony SRG-X40UH units, with payment by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. Delivery covers all eight municipalities of Qatar, and lead times are confirmed in the quotation based on stock. Products carry the manufacturer's warranty.
