Overview

The Barco RGB Laser ODL-721 is a 70-inch rear-projection video wall cube built for control rooms that run around the clock. Its laser light source is rated at more than 125,000 hours in Normal and Eco modes, and its key components are redundant. Full HD resolution, 1,800:1 contrast and a 10–40°C operating range suit operations centres, utility control rooms and command centres in Doha. Request a quote from SmartRooms Qatar.

What the ODL-721 is and how it works

The Barco RGB Laser ODL-721 is a rear-projection video wall cube from the OverView RGB Laser series, with an approximate diagonal of 70 inches. Each cube projects its image from behind the screen, so a wall of cubes shows one continuous picture with only a small mechanical gap between units rather than a conventional bezel. The light engine uses red, green and blue lasers instead of the LED light sources found in many rear-projection walls.

Brightness and colour for rooms that stay lit

Brightness depends on the mode. Boost delivers 650 cd/m², Normal 500 cd/m², Eco 250 cd/m² and Eco+ 190 cd/m². The manufacturer describes this as twice the brightness of mainstream LED-lit rear-projection walls, which allows operation under daylight so operators are not forced to work in a darkened room. Key picture figures include:

  • Resolution: Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels)
  • Contrast: 1,800:1 on-screen contrast
  • Colour: up to 170% of the Rec.709 colour triangle
  • Uniformity: typically above 95% (ANSI 9) and above 90% (ANSI 13)
  • Calibration: Sense X automatic calibration for stable colour

Each colour is controlled independently, so the unit has no rotating colour wheel and avoids colour breakup, which helps operators tell similar shades apart.

Uptime, power and heat for 24/7 operation

The light source is rated at more than 125,000 hours in both Normal and Eco modes, while Boost mode is rated at 60,000 hours. The manufacturer quotes more than 11 years of uninterrupted operation in 24/7 mode. Redundancy covers the laser banks, laser drivers, power supply, input signals and external power supply, so a single fault in these areas is designed to have limited impact.

Power draw is 120 W in Eco, 200 W in Normal and 260 W in Boost. Heat output is 390 BTU/h in Eco, 680 BTU/h typical and 860 BTU/h at maximum. Noise is below 20 dB measured three metres in front. The stated operating range is 10°C to 40°C with humidity up to 80% and non-condensing. Qatar summers can exceed 45°C, so the room must be air-conditioned to hold ambient temperature within this range. Confirm the cooling plan with the SmartRooms Qatar team before ordering.

Where it fits in Qatar

  • Utility operations centre: a control room in Mesaieed or Ras Laffan monitoring plant status around the clock, where the wall stays readable in a room lit during the day.
  • Transport command room: an operations room near Hamad International Airport showing flight and terminal data to night shift teams.
  • Municipal or security command centre: a room in West Bay or Msheireb where several cubes form one wall, with cropping and scaling set to the layout.

Planning the installation and connections

Each projection module weighs less than 63 kg and each support frame less than 39 kg. A cube measures 1,550 mm wide, 872 mm high and 622 mm deep. Confirm floor loading, rear access and the placement of the support frame before delivery. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey to check these details alongside the room layout and cable routes.

Connections include two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs with one DisplayPort output for loop-through, two HDMI 2.0 inputs at 4K 60Hz, two USB ports used only for power, and two Ethernet ports. A built-in web server, a graphical interface for all settings and a web service API support management and third-party integration. HDCP 2.2 compliance is included. The 100–240 VAC, 50–60 Hz power input covers Qatar's 240 V, 50 Hz supply. The warranty is two years.

Questions about RGB Laser ODL-721

What is the Barco RGB Laser ODL-721 built for?
It is built for 24/7 control rooms, such as utility operations centres, transport command rooms and security monitoring rooms where a video wall runs continuously. Its laser light source is rated above 125,000 hours in Normal and Eco modes, and its redundant components suit facilities that cannot accept an extended outage. For a boardroom or classroom, a smaller flat panel is usually the better fit.
How does its brightness compare with LED-lit rear-projection walls?
Barco says the RGB laser series provides twice the brightness of mainstream LED-lit rear-projection video walls. The ODL-721 offers 650 cd/m² in Boost, 500 cd/m² in Normal, 250 cd/m² in Eco and 190 cd/m² in Eco+, so you can choose a level that matches your room lighting. The high luminance is intended for operation under daylight conditions, so the room does not need to be darkened.
How long does the light source last, and does lifetime change with mode?
The light source lifetime is at least 125,000 hours in both Normal and Eco modes. Boost mode, which gives the highest brightness at 650 cd/m², is rated at 60,000 hours. For a control room running 24/7, Normal or Eco is the common choice wherever the room lighting allows it, and the lifetime difference should be part of your planning before you choose a mode.
What happens if a laser bank, driver or power supply fails?
The ODL-721 has redundant laser banks, laser drivers, power supplies, input signals and an external power supply, so a single failure in these areas is designed to have limited impact on the picture. The manufacturer quotes more than 11 years of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Discuss your maintenance and spares arrangements with SmartRooms Qatar before ordering, because this page does not cover service terms beyond the stated warranty.
Can the cube run in a hot space such as an unventilated equipment room or a glazed room facing the sun?
The stated operating range is 10°C to 40°C with humidity up to 80% and non-condensing. Qatar summers can exceed 45°C, so an unventilated equipment room or an unshaded glazed space without cooling is outside that range. Choose an air-conditioned room that keeps ambient temperature within the range, and confirm your site conditions with the SmartRooms Qatar team during the site survey.
How much heat and power does it generate?
Power draw is 120 W in Eco, 200 W in Normal and 260 W in Boost. Heat output is 390 BTU/h in Eco, 680 BTU/h typical and 860 BTU/h at maximum. To size cooling, use the 860 BTU/h maximum per cube for the highest load, multiply by the number of cubes, and add the heat from other equipment in the same room.
How heavy is each unit, and what does the wall need from the floor and structure?
Each projection module weighs less than 63 kg and each support frame less than 39 kg. The cube measures 1,550 mm wide, 872 mm high and 622 mm deep, with an approximate diagonal of 70 inches. Ask for a free site survey from SmartRooms Qatar before delivery to check floor loading, the route for moving modules through the building and the space needed behind the wall.
Which mode should I choose: Boost, Normal, Eco or Eco+?
The modes trade brightness against power and heat. Boost gives 650 cd/m² at 260 W with a 60,000-hour light source lifetime. Normal gives 500 cd/m² at 200 W, and Eco gives 250 cd/m² at 120 W, both rated at 125,000 hours. Eco+ gives 190 cd/m² (625 lumens) at 95 W. Choose the lowest mode that keeps content readable in your usual room lighting.
What inputs and outputs does it have?
The ODL-721 has two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs and one DisplayPort output for looping the signal to another unit, plus two HDMI 2.0 inputs. The inputs support 4K at 60Hz. It also has two Ethernet ports and two USB ports, which are used only for power. Cropping and scaling can be configured to match the wall layout, which is useful when several cubes are fed from one source.
Can it be controlled from our building management or another third-party system?
It has a built-in web server for direct Ethernet access, a graphical interface for all settings and operating parameters, and a web service API for third-party integration. The integration scope depends on your control system, so send your system details with your quote request and the SmartRooms Qatar team will confirm what your project requires.
What warranty applies, and how do we order several units for a government project?
The manufacturer data specifies a two-year warranty. Government ministries and authorities can order through a purchase order or LPO, or respond to government tenders including Monaqasat, and pay by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. Send the number of cubes and the wall layout, and the SmartRooms Qatar team will issue a quotation, usually within one working day.
