The Barco MVL-721 Laser Upgrade Kit converts an existing MVL-721 LED rear-projection video wall to RGB laser light while keeping the installed screen in place. It offers Full HD resolution, 1800:1 on-screen contrast, up to 170% of the REC709 colour triangle and a light source rated above 125,000 hours. It suits control rooms and boardrooms in Qatar that already own an MVL-721 wall and want lower power use and quieter operation.
Upgrading a legacy LED video wall instead of replacing it
The Barco MVL-721 Laser Upgrade Kit is built for organisations that already run an MVL-721 rear-projection video wall with LED illumination. Instead of replacing the whole wall, the kit swaps the light source for RGB laser. Barco's article reference R9869640 identifies the upgrade path from the MVL-721 to the ODL-721. The kit is designed to work with a screen already installed on site, either an FXS or a WV-FEL, so the existing screen and its gap stay as they are.
Key performance figures
The kit runs at Full HD, 1920 x 1080 pixels, and reaches on-screen contrast of 1800:1. Colour coverage extends to up to 170% of the REC709 colour triangle, giving a wider palette than the LED system it replaces. Barco names higher brightness and a longer lifetime as the main gains, and the light source is rated above 125,000 hours in both Normal and Eco mode. White points can be customised, and brightness uniformity is typically 95% at ANSI 9 and 90% at ANSI 13.
Power, heat and noise planning
- Power: 200 W in Normal mode and 120 W in Eco mode, with Barco quoting up to 50% lower power consumption.
- Heat output: 680 BTU/h in Normal mode and 390 BTU/h in Eco mode.
- Noise: less than 20 dB measured 3 metres in front of the wall.
- Power input: 100 to 240 VAC at 50 to 60 Hz, which covers Qatar's 240 V, 50 Hz mains.
- Operating range: 5°C to 35°C, up to 80% humidity non-condensing.
Heat and temperature matter more in Qatar than in most markets. Summer outdoor temperatures often exceed 45°C, so the wall must sit in an air-conditioned room able to hold conditions within the 5°C to 35°C range. Plan the cooling load around the 680 BTU/h figure before you commit.
Where it fits in Qatar
Three situations suit this kit well:
- A government operations room in Doha where an existing MVL-721 wall still performs well, and the facilities team wants more brightness and a longer service life without rebuilding the room.
- A corporate boardroom in West Bay or Msheireb where quiet operation during meetings matters and the wall is a fixed feature of the room.
- A university or training centre in Education City running a multi-screen collaboration space, where network access lets the IT team manage settings remotely.
What to plan before ordering
Confirm the existing unit is an MVL-721 and that the screen is an FXS or WV-FEL. Measure the rear space for the 1310 mm depth and keep the rear access area clear for service. Check the connections: two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs, one DisplayPort output, two HDMI 2.0 inputs, all supporting 4K at 60Hz, plus two Ethernet ports. The two USB ports are for power only.
