A tabletop microphone for conference calls

The PKC-WM1A is a compact omnidirectional digital microphone that sits on a table and picks up speech from every direction. Its eight-element array, a 126 mm by 126 mm footprint and a height of 34 mm make it easy to place between participants, and at 0.4 kg it can be moved from room to room. Pickup and audio quality in practice

Pickup distance is rated at 6 m (19.69 ft), and the 360° HD audio pickup mode covers voices around the full circle of the device. The manufacturer specifies a frequency response of 75 Hz to 20 kHz, a signal-to-noise ratio of 65 dBA and a sensitivity of –24 dBFS. Automatic gain technology is built in to help keep levels consistent when people speak from different seats and distances.

Connecting by cable, Bluetooth or a second unit

A Type-C port carries audio in and out and also charges the device, so one cable can serve both jobs during a long session. For wireless use, the Bluetooth 5.3 module (BR/EDR/BLE) pairs with the USB Bluetooth receiver in the box, and the manufacturer lists an operating distance of 10 m. Two units can be cascaded wirelessly, which suits a long boardroom table that may exceed the coverage of a single unit.

Battery, controls and charging

The 3.7 V, 4,400 mAh lithium battery gives about 8 hours of use on a full charge at maximum call volume. Charging is rated at 5 V and 2 A through the Type-C port. Seven buttons handle power, answering or ignoring calls, mute, Bluetooth, volume up and down, and cascading, and indicator lights show battery, volume and button status. The device can also run from a power supply through the same Type-C port, so a fixed charger at the table is an option for daily use.
