Overview

The NEC M551 IGB is a 55-inch 4K UHD interactive display with InGlass touch, supporting up to 20 touches and a passive pen for natural writing. NEC has discontinued this model, so SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement. It suits meeting rooms, classrooms and training spaces across Qatar that need a touch screen with built-in speakers and a three-year warranty.

Discontinued model. NEC has discontinued the M551 IGB. This page is written for organisations that already run this display, buyers comparing it with newer panels, and anyone looking for a replacement. SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement for your room.

A 55-inch 4K touch display for shared rooms

The NEC M551 IGB is a 55-inch LCD interactive display built around a 3,840 x 2160 native resolution, a 16:9 IPS panel and edge LED backlighting. Its rated brightness of 500 cd/m² and contrast ratio above 8,000:1 help text and images stay readable in meeting rooms with daylight. The toughened front glass is 3 mm thick, rated 7H for hardness, and coated with an anti-glare layer that limits reflections on the touch surface.

Touch and pen performance in meetings

The InGlass touch layer supports real multi-touch up to 20 touches, with a response time of 15 ms or less and accuracy below 1 mm. It accepts finger, gloved hand and stylus input with a tip of at least 2 mm. Windows Ink and palm rejection are included, so a presenter can rest a hand on the glass while writing. Two styluses and two AAA batteries come in the box, and a free one-year licence of FlatFrog Board for Rooms is available as a download.

Connectivity, control and built-in media

The display is designed to slot into an existing AV setup:

  • One DisplayPort and two HDMI inputs, both with HDCP
  • LAN at 100 Mbit, RS232 and a 3.5 mm remote control wire input
  • USB 2.0 MediaPlayer port for image and video files
  • 3.5 mm audio output, HDMI ARC and a powered USB port rated 10 W
  • Integrated 10 W + 10 W speakers

An Intel Smart Display Module slot accepts large and small modules up to 66 W, and a slot is provided for a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4. Control options include Crestron Connected, AMX NetLinx, PJLink and SNMP. Barco ClickShare is listed as tested compatible.

Where it fits in Qatar and what to plan for

Three situations suit this size well. A meeting room for 10 to 12 people in West Bay, where presenters write on the screen and join calls from their laptops. A small classroom or group room at a school in Al Wakrah, where students use the touch surface and the built-in speakers carry voice in a small room. A training room in Education City or an office in Msheireb, where a trainer shows files from a USB drive without a PC.

Plan the environment first. Operation is rated from 0 to +35°C with 20 to 80% humidity, so the display belongs in an air-conditioned room, away from direct sunlight and window glare. The front is rated IP5x and the rear IP2x for ingress protection, which is a reason to keep it indoors and away from dust.

Plan the wall. The unit weighs 38.5 kg and measures 1,284.5 x 757.3 x 70.9 mm, with a 300 x 300 mm VESA pattern and M6 holes. A wall mount (L20PNWALL90EU) is listed as an option. The internal power supply accepts 100-240 V AC at 50/60 Hz, which covers Qatar's 240 V, 50 Hz mains. The display carries a three-year warranty that includes the backlight.

Questions about M551 IGB

Is the NEC M551 IGB still available, and what should I buy instead?
NEC has discontinued the M551 IGB, so this exact model is no longer in the manufacturer's range. SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement, matched to your room size, touch requirements and existing AV inputs. Send us the room details and the model you already own, and we will reply with a quotation, usually within one working day.
Is a 55-inch panel the right size for a boardroom in West Bay?
A 55-inch screen with 3,840 x 2160 resolution suits a meeting room of roughly eight to twelve people, where every seat has a comfortable view of the screen. For a larger boardroom of 16 or more people, a bigger panel is usually more practical. Measure the wall and the seating distance first. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey before a wall-mounted display is fitted.
Would it work in a small classroom at a private school in Al Wakrah?
Yes, for a small classroom or group learning room. The InGlass layer supports up to 20 touches and stylus input of 2 mm or more, so students can write on the glass with the two styluses supplied. The built-in 10 W + 10 W speakers provide enough sound for a small room without a separate sound system. Confirm the room is air-conditioned, since operation is rated 0 to +35°C.
Can it be used in a meeting room that gets hot in summer?
Only in an air-conditioned room. The manufacturer rates operation from 0 to +35°C with 20 to 80% humidity, while outdoor summer temperatures in Qatar often exceed 45°C. Keep the panel away from direct sunlight and window glare, and make sure the cooling holds the room at a safe temperature during long meetings. If an area is hotter than that, speak to the SmartRooms Qatar team before deciding.
How many touches and which pen types does it support?
The InGlass touch layer supports real multi-touch up to 20 touches, with a response time of 15 ms or less and accuracy below 1 mm. It works with fingers, gloved hands and stylus tips of 2 mm or more. Windows Ink and palm rejection are included, and two styluses are supplied with the display. These features suit teams that annotate, sketch or split the screen during meetings.
Which operating systems does its touch work with?
Native multi-touch is supported on Windows 7 to 11, Linux and Android. Windows XP and Vista and Mac OS work with the default mouse function rather than native multi-touch, and Raspberry Pi is also listed as a platform. Check the operating system of your presentation laptops before ordering, especially if staff use Macs, so the touch behaviour in the room matches what your team expects.
What ports does it have for laptops and AV sources?
It has one DisplayPort input with HDCP, two HDMI inputs with HDCP, a 3.5 mm audio output and a 3.5 mm remote control wire input. Control connections include LAN at 100 Mbit and RS232. A USB 2.0 MediaPlayer port handles files, and a powered USB port rated 10 W is included. HDMI ARC is listed, and split-screen options include Triple-Split and Quad-Split.
Can it show slides and video without a PC, for a reception or training room?
Yes, through its USB 2.0 MediaPlayer port. Supported images include JPG, and video includes MP4 with H.264 or HEVC up to 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz, along with MPG, TS and WMV formats. Files are read from FAT16 or FAT32 USB drives. For a training room in Education City, a trainer can play files directly, but test your exact files before a session because supported formats are specific.
Can it be managed by a room control system or an IT team in Doha?
Yes. The specification lists Crestron Connected certification, AMX NetLinx support, PJLink, SNMP, an HTTP browser, ASCII control commands and HDMI CEC. Remote management includes automated email alerts and NaViSet Administrator 2, a free download. Security options include disabling hardware buttons and infrared, which helps IT teams in government or corporate offices lock down shared displays.
Does it work with Barco ClickShare for wireless sharing?
The manufacturer states the M551 IGB is tested compatible for Barco ClickShare in its conference configuration. That lets participants share laptop screens wirelessly, which helps hybrid meetings in Doha where a local team connects with colleagues abroad. Confirm the exact ClickShare model with the SmartRooms Qatar team before ordering.
Can one person mount it on a wall in a Lusail meeting room?
It is not advisable. The display weighs 38.5 kg without packaging and measures 1,284.5 x 757.3 x 70.9 mm, with a 300 x 300 mm VESA pattern and four M6 holes. Two installers are safer for lifting and aligning it. A wall mount is available as option L20PNWALL90EU. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey to check the wall structure and cable routing before installation in a Lusail office or hotel.
What warranty comes with it, and how do I request a quote?
The display comes with a three-year warranty that includes the backlight, and the manufacturer lists additional services. To request a quote, send your room sizes, quantities and current equipment. Quotations are usually within one working day. We accept purchase orders (LPOs) and government tenders through Monaqasat, with payment by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order.
