What the NEC P554 SST is and how its touch layer works

The NEC MultiSync P554 SST is a 55-inch LCD interactive display fitted with a ShadowSense touch layer that sits in front of the S-IPS panel. The active screen measures 1,209.6 x 680.4 mm, with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080, and the listed supported resolutions include 3840 x 2160 and 4096 x 2160. Integrated speakers rated 10 W plus 10 W are fitted, and optional 15 W plus 15 W speakers are available.

The touch layer recognises up to 10 simultaneous touches and accepts finger, glove and stylus input, with a stylus of at least 4 mm. Touch accuracy is specified at under 1.5 mm. Setup is plug and play: the data states that no drivers need to be installed on the host PC for major operating systems, and native multi-touch is listed for Windows 7 to 11, Linux and Android.

Brightness and glass for rooms with daylight

Brightness is rated at 700 cd/m², but the shipment setting is 500 cd/m² in Eco mode, so set the level deliberately during commissioning. The 3 mm toughened glass carries an anti-glare coating, transmits 92% of light (within 2%), and has a listed haze level of Pro (44). Contrast is 1200:1 typical, and viewing angles are 178 degrees horizontal and vertical at a contrast ratio above 10:1. An integrated ambient light sensor can trigger programmed actions.

Expansion, connections and sensors

The OPS slot accepts plug-in computers under the NEC and Intel OPS standard, with a listed maximum of 10 A and 61 W. A Compute Module 3 slot takes NEC Compute Modules or Raspberry Pi Compute Modules 1 and 3, so the display can run content without a separate PC. Options listed for the OPS slot include an HDBaseT receiver, HD-SDI interfaces and OPS-2C HDMI plus DisplayPort interfaces.

Where it fits in Qatar and what to plan for

A training centre in Education City could use the P554 SST for group sessions where learners take turns at the screen, with a PC in the OPS slot running the course software. A corporate meeting room in West Bay or Lusail suits a team that needs to annotate content while talking with colleagues abroad. A government office in Msheireb could use it as an information board in an air-conditioned reception area.

Environment matters more than the spec sheet suggests. The operating temperature range is 0 to +35 °C with 20 to 80% humidity, so this panel belongs indoors in air-conditioned rooms, not in outdoor areas, sunrooms or unconditioned storerooms, where Qatar's summer heat can exceed that range. Plan cable routing at the back, which is rated IP2X, and keep the front, rated IP5X, away from dust.

The panel weighs 45 kg and mounts to a 300 x 300 mm VESA pattern with M6 holes. Wall mount options listed include the BalanceBox 400 MEDIUM and several PD-series mounts, and a trolley and feet are also available. Because of the weight, we recommend a free site survey before drilling into a wall, to check the structure, fixings and viewing height.

The shipment setting draws 130 W in Eco mode, and the warranty covers three years including the backlight, with optional fourth and fifth year extensions.
