What the VT4 does in a meeting room

The Biamp TesiraFORTÉ AVB VT4 is a conferencing digital signal processor for rooms where remote callers need clear speech and the room still relies on a telephone line. Rather than running separate boxes for internet calls, analogue lines and room audio, it brings them together in one 19.0-inch (483 mm) wide chassis. Each of its four microphone or line inputs carries acoustic echo cancellation (AEC), which stops the loudspeaker signal from echoing back to the far end and reduces room reflections.

Calls, phone lines and control connections

Two call paths are built in. SIP VoIP runs over the RJ-45 network connection, while a standard FXO telephone interface links to a conventional analogue line. That combination suits a room that must keep a traditional phone link during a move to IP telephony, or that needs a fallback route. A Gigabit Ethernet port, RS-232 and GPIO let room control systems and automation platforms work with the unit, and Tesira software handles routing, mixing, equalization, filtering, dynamics and delay. The OLED display with capacitive-touch navigation shows status and diagnostics during commissioning.

Audio channels, levels and outputs

Four analogue outputs can feed ceiling speakers, an assistive listening system, an overflow zone or a recording device. Up to eight channels of configurable USB audio support laptop-based conferencing, and 128×128 AVB channels allow the unit to join larger networked audio systems. Input gain runs from 0 to 66 dB in 6 dB steps, the maximum input is +24 dBu, and frequency response spans 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Dynamic range exceeds 108 dB at 0 dB gain, with 24-bit converters at a 48 kHz sampling rate.

Power, size and operating limits

The internal universal power supply accepts 100–240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and draws less than 35 W, so Qatar's 240 V, 50 Hz mains falls within its range. The unit weighs 8 lbs (3.63 kg) and measures 1.75 inches (44 mm) high by 10.5 inches (267 mm) deep. Its operating range is 0–40°C (32–104°F), so it should sit in an air-conditioned room or cabinet. With Qatari summer temperatures often above 45°C, avoid unventilated cupboards and hot ceiling voids.
