Overview

The Sony FW-98BZ50L is a 98-inch 4K professional BRAVIA display with 780 cd/m² typical brightness, 1500 nit peak with local dimming, a 120Hz panel and Android TV with 32GB storage. Suited to boardrooms, lecture theatres and large lobbies in Doha, it offers side-mounted connections and signage playback from USB. The manufacturer has discontinued this model, so request a quote for a current equivalent or compatible replacement.

A 98-inch 4K panel for large rooms and open lobbies

The Sony FW-98BZ50L is a 98-inch professional LCD display from the BRAVIA BZ50L series. It has a 3840 x 2160 resolution, a VA panel and a direct full array LED backlight with local dimming, and it is built for large audiences in boardrooms, lecture theatres and reception areas. The manufacturer has discontinued this model, so this page is for organisations that already own one, buyers comparing it with newer displays, and anyone looking for a current equivalent or a compatible replacement.

Brightness, contrast and motion figures to check against your room

The panel is rated at 780 cd/m² typical brightness, and local dimming raises peak brightness to 1500 nits. Contrast is listed at 5000:1 and the colour gamut covers 95% of DCI-P3. The 120Hz panel with XR Motion Clarity keeps fast movement sharp, which suits sports graphics, video playback and live feeds.

Resolution: 3840 x 2160 with HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision compatibility
Viewing angle: 178 degrees horizontal and vertical
Processing: Cognitive Processor XR with XR 4K upscaling for lower-resolution sources
Colour: XR Triluminos Pro with 95% DCI-P3 coverage

Connectivity, signage and meeting features

All four HDMI inputs, two USB ports, the Ethernet port, the analog audio input and the digital audio output sit on the side of the display, so cables can be routed neatly behind a wall-mounted panel. The unit supports RS-232C and IP control and HDMI-CEC for integration with room control systems. Android TV, an HTML5 platform, 32GB onboard storage and Pro Mode let facilities teams run signage from a USB stick using BRAVIA Signage Free software. Integrated Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Apple AirPlay and Chromecast Built-In support wireless mirroring. Google Meet can be installed from the Play Store and paired with a compatible webcam.

Where it fits in Qatar and what to plan for

In a corporate boardroom in West Bay or Lusail, a 98-inch screen with 4K detail suits presentations viewed from the far end of a long table. In a university lecture theatre in Education City, it can show slides and video to a large group while HDMI inputs connect lecturers' laptops. In a mall or hotel lobby, the typical and peak brightness help content stay readable in bright surroundings, but direct sun through full-height glass still needs checking on site.

Without its stand, the panel weighs 67.2 kg and measures 2199 x 1255 x 85 mm, so wall mounting needs a structural check and a professional installation team. The VESA hole pitch is 600 x 400 mm. Portrait orientation and a tilt range of -15 to +20 degrees allow flexible placement in corridors and retail aisles. Rated power consumption is 505 W, standby is 0.5 W and the display lists 24/7 operation. The source data does not give an operating temperature range, so confirm the environment with the SmartRooms Qatar team before placing it in a space that is not air-conditioned.

Planning the purchase with SmartRooms Qatar

Ask for a free site survey before ordering, so the wall, bracket, cable route and viewing distance are confirmed. We deliver to all eight municipalities of Qatar and can arrange professional installation. Government bodies and schools buying several units can issue a purchase order (LPO) or respond to a tender, and payment can be made by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. Because this model is discontinued, we will also check a current equivalent or compatible replacement against your original specification.

Request a quote and tell us the room size, the mounting wall and the number of units. Quotations are usually issued within one working day.

Questions about FW-98BZ50L

Is the Sony FW-98BZ50L still available from the manufacturer?

No. Sony has discontinued the FW-98BZ50L, so new units may not be available from the manufacturer. SmartRooms Qatar can still quote for a current equivalent or a compatible replacement that matches the 98-inch size, 4K resolution and signage features you need. Send us your room plan and the software you run, and we will prepare a quotation based on that specification.

Who is the FW-98BZ50L designed for?

It suits organisations that need a large, bright 4K screen for group viewing, such as boardrooms, lecture theatres, auditoriums, retail floors and corporate lobbies. The 3840 x 2160 resolution, 780 cd/m² typical brightness and 1500 nit peak with local dimming suit rooms where the audience sits several metres from the screen. It is also used for digital signage with content played from USB.

How bright is the screen for a sunlit lobby in West Bay or Lusail?

The panel is rated at 780 cd/m² typical brightness, with peak brightness of 1500 nits when Full Array Local Dimming is active. That helps content remain visible in a bright lobby, but direct sun through full-height glass can still wash out the picture. Ask for a site survey so we can review window orientation, glare and the mounting position before you choose the final location.

Can a 98-inch display be wall mounted by a small team?

Not without planning. Without its stand the FW-98BZ50L weighs 67.2 kg and measures 2199 x 1255 x 85 mm, and its VESA hole pitch is 600 x 400 mm. Lifting and mounting should be handled by a professional installation team on a suitable wall or structure. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey and professional installation, which confirm the wall and bracket before the panel arrives.

Can it be mounted in portrait orientation?

Yes. The specifications list portrait and tilt compatibility, with a tilt range of -15 to +20 degrees. Portrait mounting suits corridor signage, menu boards and wayfinding in malls, hospitals and university buildings. Before delivery, check the width of lifts and stairwells along the carrying route, and confirm with the installer that the bracket and wall plan suit portrait use.

What connections are on the side of the display?

All signal connections sit on the side to simplify cable routing behind a wall-mounted panel. The side has four HDMI inputs, two USB ports, one Ethernet port, one analog audio input, one digital audio output and a hybrid composite and centre-speaker input. The unit also supports RS-232C and IP control and HDMI-CEC for room control systems.

Can we share content wirelessly from laptops and phones?

Yes. The display has integrated Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, and supports Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast Built-In. A presenter can mirror a phone or tablet onto the big screen without a cable. In a boardroom that connects with teams abroad, wireless mirroring reduces cable swapping, while the HDMI inputs remain the more dependable choice for laptops that need a fixed connection.

Can it run digital signage without a separate media player?

For many layouts, yes. The platform supports HTML5, and BRAVIA Signage Free plays HTML content, video and photos copied onto a USB stick placed in the display. It has 32GB of onboard storage for apps and content. Shops and schools can update content locally, while complex schedules across several screens may need a separate media player, which we will review with you before purchase.

Can the display be locked down for public areas?

Yes. The professional settings let you disable input or remote control functions, remove labels and block buttons to prevent tampering. Settings can be stored and copied from display to display using a USB flash drive, which saves time when you configure several screens for a school, hotel or government reception area.

Can it be used for video meetings?

Yes, with extra equipment. Google Meet can be downloaded from the Google Play Store on the Android TV platform and paired with a compatible webcam for video calls on the 98-inch screen. Choose the webcam with the SmartRooms Qatar team when you request a quotation, so it suits the room size and the installation position.

How much power does it use?

Rated power consumption is 505 W, and standby power is listed at 0.5 W. The on-mode EPREL figure is 154 kWh per 1,000 hours. The specifications also list 24/7 operation, a power saving mode and dynamic backlight control. Use the rated figure in your electrical plan, and ask our team to confirm the supply point and cable route during the site survey.

How do schools or government offices buy several units?

Schools and government bodies can order with a purchase order (LPO), and government tenders including Monaqasat are supported. Payment can be made by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. Send the number of units, the room types and the mounting walls, and we usually issue quotations within one working day, with a site survey for each location available before installation.
