What the ActivSoundBar 3 is and why it is discontinued

The Promethean ActivSoundBar 3, model ASB-40-3, adds audio to compatible Promethean interactive displays. Promethean has discontinued this model and ended sale, so new units are no longer offered by the manufacturer. This page is written for organisations that already own the bar, buyers comparing it with newer audio options, and anyone looking for a replacement that suits their current display setup.

Audio specifications that matter in a room

Total output is 2 x 20 W RMS, delivered through four 2.25-inch speakers. The stated frequency response runs from 65 Hz to 20 kHz, and the signal-to-noise ratio is 75 dB or better. For a classroom or meeting room where the display's own sound is too weak, these figures describe clear speech and presentation audio. For a large hall, a dedicated sound system is usually the better choice.

• Bluetooth for wireless playback from a laptop or phone
• One AUX input and one S/PDIF input for wired sources
• One USB-A port fitted
• Infrared remote control included in the box

Compatibility, connections and power

Promethean lists this bar for use with ActivPanel, ActivPanel i-Series, ActivBoard Touch and ActivBoard displays. Before ordering, confirm your exact display model and its available ports with the SmartRooms Qatar team, because compatibility depends on the display itself. Power is rated 100 - 240 V at 50/60 Hz, which covers Qatar's 240 V, 50 Hz mains. The box includes three power cables for UK, EU and US plugs, so the correct cable can be matched to your sockets. Standby draw is 0.5 W or more, and the unit enters automatic standby after 2 hours.

Where it fits in Qatar

In a meeting room in West Bay, a Promethean display may be used for video calls with teams abroad. Bluetooth lets a presenter connect a phone quickly, while the AUX input takes audio from a conferencing laptop through the included 5 m cable.

In a training room in the Industrial Area of Doha, safety briefings and induction sessions need speech that reaches the back rows. Positioning the bar and testing it with a typical presentation before the first session helps set a comfortable level for everyone.

In a school in Education City or Al Rayyan refitting its classrooms, a teacher may want lesson audio from the panel without a separate speaker set. Mounting height and cable routing should be checked before work begins.

What to plan for before you order

• Installation should be completed by a qualified installer
• Components not supplied by Promethean may affect performance, safety and warranty
• Net weight 4.0 kg; dimensions 860 x 100 x 70 mm
• Box includes brackets, fittings and a drilling guide

A free site survey from SmartRooms Qatar is recommended before wall mounting, so the mounting point, wall type and cable route can be confirmed in advance.
