AP7-U65

A 65-inch 4K panel with Vellum touch

The AP7-U65 is the 65-inch member of the Nickel edition in Promethean's ActivPanel Elements series. Its 4K UHD TFT LCD uses a direct LED backlight and runs at 3840 x 2160 resolution and 60 Hz across a display area of 1429 x 804 mm. Brightness is rated at 350 cd/m2 with a 4000:1 contrast ratio and a 178-degree viewing angle, so content stays readable from the sides of a room. The anti-glare, heat-tempered glass is rated 9H on the pencil scale.

Touch runs on Vellum writing technology with 15 continuous touch points, 1 mm touch accuracy and a 100 Hz scan rate. The battery-less pen has a 3 mm tip and rests in a full-length tray built into the frame. Palm detection is included, so a presenter can rest a hand on the glass while writing. An ambient light sensor is also fitted.

Android, OPS and connectivity for a shared room

Each unit runs Android Oreo 8 with 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage and a quad-core processor, so a lesson or meeting can start from the panel without a laptop. The OPS slot accepts a compatible plug-in computing module, which suits a school or office that wants a full PC inside the display. Inputs include two rear and one front HDMI 2.0, a VGA input with audio, CVBS, a microphone input and a headphone output. Control and networking come from RS-232 and two RJ45 LAN ports rated 10/100 Mbps. A Wi-Fi module with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac 2x2 and antennas is included. Wake-on-LAN and remote over-the-air updates are supported, and fleets can be managed with Promethean Panel Management.

Where a 65-inch Nickel fits in Qatar

This size suits rooms where people sit close to the screen. Three typical settings:

• Classrooms: a private school in Al Wakrah fitting out a new science room, where the panel stays readable from the back row without overwhelming the space.
• Meeting rooms in Doha: a West Bay or Msheireb office where a small team connects with colleagues abroad. The source lists compatibility with Windows 8 to 10, OS X 10.8 to 10.11, macOS Sierra 10.12.1 or later, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Chrome OS.
• Training rooms: an Education City training centre or an industrial site in Mesaieed running short courses for staff.

What to plan before ordering

The panel measures 1536 x 960 x 90 mm and weighs 46 kg net, or 65.3 kg packed. Its VESA mount point is 600 x 400 mm, so brackets and fixings must be rated for that load. Walls, columns and glass partitions should be checked on a site survey before anything is fixed. SmartRooms Qatar offers free site surveys and professional installation, and the source states that installation should be carried out by a qualified installer.

Power is listed as 100V to 240V AC, with maximum consumption of 235 W for this size and standby at 0.5 W or less. Operating range is 0°C to 40°C with 20% to 80% non-condensing humidity, so the room must stay air-conditioned, particularly when afternoon temperatures in summer pass 45°C. The 65-inch model is listed as Energy Star certified, and the panel carries CE, FCC, IC, UL, CUL, CB and RCM certifications.

A discontinued model: buying with a replacement in mind

Promethean has discontinued the AP7-U65, which is listed as end of sale in the ActivPanel Elements series. Organisations that already run this panel can use these details to specify a like-for-like replacement. Buyers comparing it with newer models should check size, touch specification, OPS support and connectivity side by side. Request a quote and the SmartRooms Qatar team will recommend a current equivalent or compatible replacement matched to your room, your wall and your software needs.
