Overview

The Sony SRG-X400 is a remotely controlled PTZ camera with a 1/2.5-type Exmor R sensor, up to 30x zoom in 4K and 40x in Full HD, and a horizontal view of about 70 degrees. It streams over RTSP, RTMP(S) and SRT, supports NDI|HX with a separate licence, and can be powered by PoE+. Sony has discontinued this model, so SmartRooms Qatar quotes current equivalents for lecture halls, classrooms and meeting rooms across Qatar.

What the SRG-X400 does in a room

The Sony SRG-X400 is a remotely controlled pan-tilt-zoom camera built for fixed installations, where an operator or a control system frames the speaker from a distance. Sony has discontinued this model. This page is written for organisations that already run one, buyers comparing it with newer PTZ cameras, and anyone who needs a replacement that works in a similar way. SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement.

Sensor, zoom and framing

The image starts with a 1/2.5-type Exmor R CMOS sensor with approximately 8.5 million effective pixels. Zoom reaches 30x when shooting 4K and 40x in Full HD with Clear Image Zoom, and 4K output requires the optional 4K licence. The focal length runs from 4.4 mm at wide to 88.0 mm at tele, with an aperture of F2.0 to F3.8, and the horizontal viewing angle is approximately 70 degrees. The minimum illumination of 1.6 lux suits dimmed lecture halls, though the camera should still be tested in the actual room.

Movement is quick. Maximum pan speed is 300 degrees per second and maximum tilt speed is 126 degrees per second. The camera stores 256 presets in CGI mode or 100 in VISCA mode. Picture Freeze Preset holds a steady image while the camera moves between presets, and PTZ Motion Sync blends pan, tilt and zoom movements into smoother transitions. Pan range is plus or minus 170 degrees and tilt runs from +90 to -20 degrees.

IP streaming and NDI|HX integration

The camera encodes H.264 and H.265 at up to 60 frames per second, with IP video up to 3840x2160. It supports three streams at once and up to five clients, using RTSP, RTMP(S) and SRT. RTMP(S) and SRT require firmware V3.00. NDI|HX lets the camera join a network of other NDI-enabled devices once a licence is bought separately, which suits school studio builds. Two microphone inputs accept mini-phone connectors with mic or line selection, and audio is embedded in the IP stream.

Where it fits in Qatar

  • School studio in Al Rayyan: a private school fitting out a small production room for recording lessons and assemblies, feeding the signal through HDMI, 3G-SDI or NDI|HX.
  • Boardroom in West Bay: a company meeting room where saved presets frame the presenter, the table and a wide shot, with the camera operated from a touch panel or the IR remote.
  • Training room in Msheireb: a clinic or healthcare training centre recording procedures and briefings, where a steady image during preset moves matters to viewers.

Operating temperature is 0 to 40 degrees Celsius, so this camera belongs in air-conditioned rooms. Avoid window positions that receive direct sun and any outdoor location, because Qatar summer temperatures can exceed 45 degrees Celsius.

Planning the installation

Ceiling mounting is supported, and two ceiling brackets and a wire rope are supplied. The mounting angle must stay within less than plus or minus 15 degrees, so check the alignment before fixing. The camera measures 158.4 x 177.5 x 200.2 mm and weighs approximately 1.8 kg. A free site survey helps confirm sightlines, cable routes and the power method, either PoE+ to IEEE 802.3at or the supplied AC adaptor.

To request a quote for a current equivalent or a compatible replacement, contact SmartRooms Qatar with your room size and control setup. Quotations are usually issued within one working day.

Questions about SRG-X400

Is the Sony SRG-X400 still sold by Sony?
No. Sony has discontinued the SRG-X400, so new units are not available from the manufacturer. Organisations that already own one can still use it, and SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current PTZ camera or a compatible replacement that matches the room size, zoom needs and control system in place.
Would the SRG-X400 suit a lecture hall at a university in Education City?
Yes, for lecture capture with one presenter. The 30x zoom in 4K and 40x in Full HD, along with the 70 degree horizontal view, cover a stage and a speaker at the front. Presets let staff return to the lectern framing quickly. Confirm the seating layout and mounting height during a free site survey.
Can a boardroom in West Bay use the SRG-X400 for video calls?
It can frame the presenter and table from saved presets, and the IP output supports streaming. The camera records up to 1920x1080 in HD without extra licences. For conference platforms, check the video call software in use and confirm the connection method with SmartRooms Qatar before ordering.
Could a private school in Al Rayyan build a small studio around this camera?
Yes. The camera outputs HDMI, 3G-SDI and IP streams, and NDI|HX lets it join other NDI-enabled devices after a separate licence purchase. Two microphone inputs allow an external microphone for lessons and assemblies. Plan the switcher and cable routes before purchase, and request a quote with your existing equipment list.
Is the camera suitable for a training room in Msheireb used for healthcare courses?
It suits an indoor training room that needs steady recordings of demonstrations. Picture Freeze Preset keeps the image stable during preset moves, and PTZ Motion Sync blends movements smoothly. Keep the camera in an air-conditioned space, as the operating range is 0 to 40 degrees Celsius.
Can the SRG-X400 be placed by a window facing the sun in a Doha office?
Not recommended. The operating temperature is 0 to 40 degrees Celsius, while Qatar summer temperatures can exceed 45 degrees Celsius near windows and outdoor walls. Install it inside an air-conditioned room, away from direct sun, and confirm the position with the SmartRooms Qatar team during a site survey.
Do I need the 4K licence to get 4K output from this camera?
Yes. The manufacturer lists 4K capability as available only after purchasing the optional 4K licence. Without it, the camera works at HD resolutions such as 1920x1080 and 1280x720. The 30x zoom applies to 4K, while HD zoom reaches 40x with Clear Image Zoom.
Is NDI|HX included with the SRG-X400?
No. NDI|HX requires a licence that is sold separately. NDI is a registered trademark of Vizrt NDI AB. Once licensed, the camera can connect with other NDI-enabled devices on the same network, which is useful for multi-camera school studios. Ask for a quote that includes the licence if your setup needs it.
What power options does the SRG-X400 support?
The camera accepts PoE+ to IEEE 802.3at or DC 12V (10.8 to 13.2V). Power consumption is 25.5 W maximum, and an AC power adaptor is included in the supplied accessories. A PoE+ connection can reduce cabling where the network switch can supply the power, so confirm the switch capacity during planning.
How should the camera be mounted, and what space does it need?
The camera supports ceiling mounting with two brackets and a wire rope supplied. Keep the mounting angle within less than plus or minus 15 degrees. It measures 158.4 x 177.5 x 200.2 mm and weighs approximately 1.8 kg, so check the ceiling structure and clearance for the pan and tilt range of plus or minus 170 degrees and +90 to -20 degrees.
Which control options does the SRG-X400 work with?
It supports VISCA over IP, VISCA RS-422 through RJ45 connectors, and an IR remote commander. Up to 256 presets can be stored in CGI mode or 100 in VISCA mode. Confirm which protocol your existing control panel or room control system uses before ordering, and ask SmartRooms Qatar for a quote based on that setup.
