Overview

The Sony SRG-XB25 is an IP box-style PTZ camera with a 25x optical zoom lens and 4K 60p video output over HDMI and IP. Power, video and camera control can share one Ethernet cable through PoE. Sony has discontinued this model, so organisations that already own it, or are comparing options for lecture capture and hybrid meetings, should request a quote for a current equivalent or compatible replacement.

What the SRG-XB25 is and its current status

The Sony SRG-XB25 is a box-style remote camera designed to capture and stream 4K video from a fixed position. Its integrated lens provides 25x optical zoom, so a camera mounted at the back of a room can still produce tight shots of a presenter, a lecturer's handwriting or a speaker's gestures. Sony has discontinued this model. If your organisation already runs one, or you are comparing it with newer cameras, SmartRooms Qatar will quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement.

Specifications that matter for a fixed installation

The camera uses a 1/2.5-type Exmor R CMOS sensor with approximately 8.40 megapixels of effective pixels. Its signal system covers 3840×2160 at 59.94p and 50p, along with 1920×1080 and 1280×720 formats for lower-resolution streams. The optical zoom spans f = 4.8 mm to 120 mm, equivalent to 28 mm to 694 mm on a 35 mm camera, with a horizontal viewing angle of approximately 68 degrees. Minimum illumination is 0.8 lux at 4K output, and the minimum object distance is 1500 mm.

Connectivity: power, video and control on one cable

The camera can take power over Ethernet under IEEE 802.3af, drawing 12.9 W on the PoE input, or run from DC 12 V at 11.0 W. Its AC adapter accepts 100 V to 240 V at 50/60 Hz, so the supply range includes Qatar's 240 V mains, although the plug type should be confirmed before ordering. Streaming supports RTSP, RTMP and SRT, with H.264 or H.265 compression and selectable CBR or VBR bitrate. Control runs over VISCA, VISCA over IP or CGI, and the camera stores 256 presets. HDMI provides local video output, and NDI|HX is available with a licence sold separately.

Where it fits in Qatar

  • University lecture theatre in Education City: a rear-wall camera frames the lecturer and board in tight shots, feeding a recording or streaming setup over one Ethernet cable.
  • Government meeting room in Msheireb: a fixed camera covers a committee table with close presenter shots, and the tally lamp shows presenters when the camera is active.
  • Content studio in The Pearl: a small team can run several fixed cameras without a dedicated operator for each one, because the zoom handles framing from a distance.

What to plan before ordering

Start with the environment. The operating range is 0 °C to 40 °C, and summer temperatures in Qatar can exceed 45 °C, so this camera belongs in an air-conditioned room, not on an outdoor wall, a porch or an unconditioned lobby. The storage range is –20 °C to +60 °C. At 80.1 × 70.9 × 177.2 mm and about 0.87 kg, it is compact, but the mounting angle is limited to less than ±45 degrees from horizontal, and the 1500 mm minimum object distance should guide shot positions. Ceiling mounting is supported. A free site survey will confirm sightlines and cable routes. The package includes an AC adapter, wire rope, two sizes of mounting screws and an HDMI cable fixing plate.

Replacement, quantity and procurement

Schools, universities and government offices often need several cameras for a multi-room project. Orders can be raised by purchase order or LPO, and government tenders, including Monaqasat, are supported. Send us your room list, mounting heights and whether you need NDI|HX, and SmartRooms Qatar will return a quotation for a current equivalent or a compatible replacement, usually within one working day. We deliver to all eight municipalities of Qatar and can arrange professional installation.

Questions about SRG-XB25

Is the Sony SRG-XB25 still sold by Sony?
No. Sony has discontinued the SRG-XB25, so this model is no longer in the manufacturer's current range. If you are planning a lecture capture, streaming or meeting room project in Qatar, SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement. If you already own units, we can review what they connect to so the replacement fits your existing control and streaming setup. Request a quote with your room list and mounting plans.
Where does a 25x zoom box camera suit in Qatar?
Sony positions this camera for seminar rooms, lecture theatres, virtual production studios, government and parliament buildings and places of worship. In Qatar, that means a university lecture hall in Education City, a government meeting room in Msheireb or a content studio in The Pearl where one or two fixed cameras must capture presenters from a distance. It suits multi-camera set-ups that need high-quality images without a dedicated camera operator for every camera.
How useful is 25x optical zoom in a large lecture theatre?
Optical zoom changes the lens focal length rather than enlarging pixels, so detail stays sharp. The SRG-XB25 zooms from f = 4.8 mm to 120 mm, equal to 28 mm to 694 mm on a 35 mm camera, and adds digital zoom on top. In a large lecture theatre at Education City, a camera mounted at the back can frame the lecturer's gestures and handwriting on a board without moving. Keep the 1500 mm minimum object distance in mind when choosing the shot position.
Does it need a separate power supply, or can it run on PoE?
It can run on either. The camera supports PoE under IEEE 802.3af, drawing 12.9 W on the PoE input, so one Ethernet cable can carry power, streaming video and control. Alternatively it runs on DC 12 V at 11.0 W from the supplied AC adapter, which accepts 100 V to 240 V at 50/60 Hz. Confirm the plug type for Qatar sockets with your quotation, and check that your PoE switch can supply the 12.9 W draw.
What video formats does the SRG-XB25 output?
The signal system includes 3840×2160 at 59.94p, 29.97p, 50p and 25p, plus 1920×1080 at 59.94p, 59.94i, 50p, 50i, 29.97p and 25p, and 1280×720 and 640×360 formats. A 640×480 at 59.94p format is available on HDMI output only. HDMI colour options are YUV 4:2:2 8-bit, YUV 4:2:0 8-bit and RGB 4:4:4 8-bit. Choose the 50p or 25p timings if your production or broadcast chain runs on 50 Hz.
Which streaming protocols does it support, and is a licence needed?
The camera supports RTSP, RTMP and SRT for IP streaming, with H.264 or H.265 compression and selectable CBR or VBR bitrate. Audio is AAC LC at 256 kbps or 128 kbps, stereo over IP. NDI|HX capability is included, but the licence is sold separately, so budget for it if your workflow uses NDI. Ask the SmartRooms Qatar team to confirm that your encoder or video management platform works with these protocols before you order.
How is the camera controlled, and how many presets can it store?
The camera is controlled through VISCA, VISCA over IP or CGI, so a control system or software on the network can send commands to it. It stores 256 presets, which lets a lecture room save positions for the lectern, the whiteboard and the audience area. Check that your existing control system supports one of these methods before ordering, especially if you are replacing an older camera in a live system.
Will the camera cope with Qatar's summer heat?
Install it in an air-conditioned space. The operating temperature range is 0 °C to 40 °C (32 °F to 104 °F), and the storage range is –20 °C to +60 °C. Summer temperatures in Qatar can exceed 45 °C, so it should sit indoors in a conditioned meeting room or lecture hall, not on an external wall or in an unconditioned lobby or porch. If you are unsure about a specific location, the SmartRooms Qatar team will advise during the site survey.
Can it be ceiling-mounted in a school hall in Al Wakrah?
Yes, the data lists ceiling mounting as supported. The mountable angle is less than ±45 degrees to the horizontal, so the bracket must keep the camera within that tilt range. The body has upper and lower tripod mounts and a tripod screw hole of 4.5 mm to 6 mm, which helps with alignment. For a multi-purpose hall in Al Wakrah, a free site survey confirms ceiling height, sightlines to the stage and cable routes before installation.
Can it capture sound for a boardroom or government meeting room?
The camera has a 3.5 mm mini jack audio input with plug-in power supported, and a 3.5 mm mini jack audio output. It captures one audio channel and encodes AAC LC audio for IP streams. For a boardroom in The Pearl or a government meeting room in Msheireb, connect a suitable microphone or line-level source to the input. Test the audio path during installation, because the camera is not a substitute for a dedicated conference microphone system.
Is it compatible with lecture capture systems such as the REA-C1000?
Sony's data describes the SRG-XB25 as a partner for the REA-C1000 Edge Analytics Appliance in lecture capture. The camera's 25x zoom captures a speaker's gestures and handwriting in large classrooms, letting the REA-C1000 deliver the output the customer needs. Compatibility still depends on your overall design, so confirm the REA-C1000 setup and your network with SmartRooms Qatar before ordering, and check that the camera's IP and streaming outputs match your recording platform.
What comes in the box, and what else should I plan to order?
The supplied items are a safety regulations sheet, an AC adapter, a wire rope, M3×8 mounting screws, M2.6×6 black mounting screws and an HDMI cable fixing plate. The camera weighs about 0.87 kg and measures 80.1 × 70.9 × 177.2 mm. Items not listed, such as the HDMI cable, Ethernet cable, a PoE switch, any ceiling mounting hardware and an NDI|HX licence if you need it, should be confirmed in your quotation.
