Overview

The Promethean AP7-U86 is the 86-inch 4K model in the discontinued ActivPanel Nickel range, a touch display with a built-in Android system, 15 touch points and a 400 cd/m² panel. It suits lecture halls, boardrooms and large training rooms in Qatar that need a big writing surface. The manufacturer has discontinued this model, so SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement.

What the 86-inch AP7-U86 delivers

The Promethean AP7-U86 is the 86-inch model in the ActivPanel Nickel range, part of the ActivPanel Elements series. It is the largest of the three Nickel sizes and offers a 4K UHD display area of 1895 x 1066 mm. Promethean has discontinued this model, so this page is written for organisations that already run one, buyers comparing it with newer panels, and anyone who needs a replacement for a large room.

For a big room, the figures that matter most are the 3840 x 2160 resolution at 60 Hz, the 400 cd/m² brightness and the 4000:1 contrast ratio. The TFT LCD panel uses direct LED backlighting, and its heat-tempered anti-glare glass carries a 9H pencil hardness rating. A 178 degree viewing angle keeps the picture readable for students or guests seated at the sides of the room.

Writing, touch and built-in software

Touch: Vellum writing technology with 15 continuous touch points and 1 mm accuracy.
Speed: 100 Hz scan rate and 8 ms display response time.
Pen: one battery-less pen with a 3 mm tip, stored in an integrated full-length tray.

Palm detection means a presenter can rest a hand on the glass while writing. The panel does not tell a pen apart from a finger, so both act the same way, which suits group work at the board. Annotation works over any connected source, and the built-in Android 8 system includes a whiteboard, timer, spinner, screen capture, screen share, browser, PDF reader and media players.

Two 15 W speakers face the room, and front controls cover power, menu, volume and source selection. ActivInspire Professional is listed as included in the education software licence section.

Where it fits in Qatar

In a university lecture hall in Education City, the 86-inch panel lets students at the back of the room follow slides and annotations clearly. The rear and front HDMI inputs, the VGA input and the USB touch ports allow a lecturer to connect a laptop with a cable while touch keeps working.

In a boardroom in West Bay, the panel can display a computer for presentations, while the 10/100 Mbps LAN port and RS-232 control give the IT team options for managing it over the network. Wake-on-LAN is supported. The source data does not list a built-in camera or conferencing microphone, so any video call equipment should be included in the quotation alongside the panel.

In a private school in Al Rayyan fitting out a multi-purpose hall, the panel can serve as the main display for assemblies, presentations and staff briefings. Its built-in Android system and single OPS slot give the school room to add a computer module later if its teaching needs change.

What to plan before ordering

Net weight is 84 kg and packed weight is 107.2 kg, so confirm the wall structure first.
Panel size is 2018 x 1236 x 113 mm, with a 700 x 400 mm VESA pattern and a wall mount included.
Power input is 100 V to 240 V AC, with maximum draw of 450 W and standby of 0.5 W or less.
Operating range is 0°C to 40°C, with storage from -15°C to 55°C and 20% to 80% non-condensing humidity.
The source data does not list Energy Star certification for this 86-inch size.

Installation should be completed by a qualified installer, and components not supplied by Promethean may affect performance, safety and warranty. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey before wall mounting, professional installation, and delivery to all eight municipalities of Qatar.

Because the AP7-U86 is discontinued, the quotation will cover a current equivalent or a compatible replacement that matches your room size, mounting wall and power supply. Send your room dimensions and the number of units to SmartRooms Qatar to request a quote, and the team will usually respond within one working day.

Questions about AP7-U86

Is the Promethean AP7-U86 still sold new?

No. Promethean has discontinued the AP7-U86, the 86-inch model in the ActivPanel Nickel range. SmartRooms Qatar can quote a current equivalent or a compatible replacement for the same room. If your school, office or lecture hall already runs this panel, send the model label and room dimensions so the team can compare the closest current option before you commit.

Is the AP7-U86 right for a lecture hall in Education City?

It suits a lecture hall of substantial size where students sit several metres from the screen. The 86-inch 4K panel offers a 1895 x 1066 mm display area, and its 400 cd/m² brightness helps when some daylight enters the room. Smaller seminar rooms may be better served by the 65-inch or 75-inch sibling models.

How does the 86-inch model differ from the AP7-U65 and AP7-U75?

Size, weight and mounting are the main differences. The AP7-U86 has a 1895 x 1066 mm display area and a net weight of 84 kg, compared with 46 kg for the 65-inch and 64 kg for the 75-inch. Its brightness is rated at 400 cd/m², against 350 cd/m² for the two smaller models, and its VESA mount pattern is 700 x 400 mm.

What resolution, colour and brightness does it offer?

The panel is a TFT LCD with direct LED backlight, 4K UHD resolution of 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz, and 1.07 billion display colours. Brightness is rated at 400 cd/m² with a 4000:1 contrast ratio and a 178 degree viewing angle. An ambient light sensor is included, which is useful where daylight through windows changes during the day.

How does the touch and writing system work?

The AP7-U86 uses Vellum writing technology with 15 continuous touch points, 1 mm touch accuracy and a 100 Hz scan rate. Palm detection is included, so a presenter can rest a hand on the glass. The panel does not distinguish pen from touch, so both behave the same. One battery-less pen with a 3 mm tip is supplied, and a full-length pen tray is built in.

Which computers and operating systems can connect to it?

The built-in Android 8 (Oreo) system runs teaching apps without an external computer. For external computers, the source data lists compatibility with Windows 8 to 10, OS X 10.8 to 10.11, macOS Sierra 10.12.1 or later, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Chrome OS. Windows gestures are supported, and a 3 m USB cable is included for connecting touch to a computer.

Can a wall in a West Bay office carry an 84 kg panel?

Only after the wall structure has been checked. The net weight is 84 kg and the packed weight is 107.2 kg, and the VESA pattern is 700 x 400 mm. A wall mount is included in the box. SmartRooms Qatar offers a free site survey to assess the wall before installation, and professional installation can follow the survey and quotation.

Does it run on Qatar's 240 V mains supply?

Yes. The power input is rated 100 V to 240 V AC, which includes Qatar's 240 V supply. A 3 m regional power cable is supplied, so check that its plug matches the wall socket before fitting. Maximum power consumption is 450 W and standby draw is 0.5 W or less, so plan a dedicated socket near the mount position.

Can it go in a room that gets hot during Qatar summers?

Only in an air-conditioned room. The operating range is 0°C to 40°C with 20% to 80% non-condensing humidity, and storage is rated from -15°C to 55°C. Qatar summer temperatures can exceed 45°C, so keep the panel out of unconditioned rooms and away from direct sun through glass. Confirm the room conditions with the SmartRooms Qatar team before fitting.

Is the AP7-U86 Energy Star certified?

No. The source data lists Energy Star certification for the 65-inch and 75-inch models but not for the 86-inch AP7-U86. This model carries CE, FCC, IC, UL, CUL, CB and RCM certifications. If your tender requires Energy Star, compare the current equivalent proposed in the quotation against that requirement before you buy.

Can a boardroom in Doha connect to video calls with teams abroad?

The panel can display a laptop or conference computer through its HDMI inputs, and it can be controlled over LAN or RS-232. The box includes a Wi-Fi module with two antennas. The source data does not list a built-in camera or conferencing microphone, so video call equipment should be specified separately in the quotation.

Can a school in Al Rayyan order several units on an LPO?

Yes. SmartRooms Qatar accepts purchase orders (LPOs) and government tenders, including Monaqasat, and payment can be made by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. List the room sizes and wall types when you request the quote, so the team can match each unit to a current equivalent. Quotations are usually issued within one working day.
