Name: Promethean ActivPanel 9 AP9-A86 86-inch Interactive Display
Brand: Promethean
SKU: promethean-ap9-a86
Availability: Discontinued

Overview

The Promethean ActivPanel 9 AP9-A86 is an 86-inch 4K UHD interactive display with 20 continuous touch points, two battery-less pens and an OPS slot for a plug-in computing module. It also offers Wi-Fi 6, a 60 W USB-C port and ActivInspire Professional. The manufacturer has discontinued this model, so SmartRooms Qatar quotes a current equivalent or compatible replacement for boardrooms, lecture halls and large training rooms in Qatar.

What this 86-inch ActivPanel 9 is

The Promethean ActivPanel 9 AP9-A86 is an 86-inch interactive display built around a 4K UHD TFT LCD panel with direct LED backlighting. It runs ActivPanel OS, an Android-based system, on a quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 processor with 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The manufacturer has discontinued this model. This page is written for organisations that already own one, for buyers comparing it with newer models, and for anyone who needs a current equivalent or a compatible replacement.

Display and touch figures that matter in a large room

Resolution: 3840 x 2160 pixels at 60 Hz, across a display area of 1895 x 1066 mm.
Brightness and contrast: 400 cd/m² rated brightness, with a 5000:1 dynamic and 1200:1 static contrast ratio.
Glass: 4 mm heat-tempered, anti-glare and anti-fingerprint glass, bonded to the panel, with 9H pencil hardness.
Touch: 20 continuous touch points, 1 mm touch accuracy and a 200 Hz scan rate.

At 86 inches the screen gives a group a wide working surface, and the 4K resolution keeps small text and fine diagrams sharp when a presenter stands close to the glass. Palm rejection and palm erase, together with pen and touch differentiation, let a presenter rest a hand on the glass while writing with a pen. The ambient light sensor helps the display respond to room lighting, which matters where windows or bright ceiling lights are present.

Connectivity, OPS and the ActivPanel OS

The rear and front panels provide three HDMI 2.0 inputs in total, a single HDMI 2.0 output, one DisplayPort 1.2 input and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port that delivers 60 W Power Delivery to a connected laptop. A single OPS slot takes a plug-in computing module, which lets the room run the software staff already use without a separate PC on the desk. Wi-Fi supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax with dual band and Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth is 5.0, and the RJ45 LAN ports run at 1 Gbps with Wake-on-LAN. The panel also includes a Trusted Platform Module, cloud-based user profiles, over-the-air updates and Promethean Admin Tools for managing panels remotely.

Where the 86-inch model fits in Qatar

Three situations suit this size well:

A university lecture hall in Education City, where a lecturer writes, annotates and plays video for a full cohort, with the OPS slot keeping the lecture computer at the front of the room.
A government authority boardroom in Doha that connects with teams abroad, using the HDMI and USB-C inputs for laptop presentations and the built-in speakers for remote participants.
A private school in Al Rayyan converting a large assembly or multipurpose hall, where the Explain Everything Whiteboard and the included ActivInspire Professional licence support lessons.

Qatar summer heat, which regularly passes 45 °C outdoors, makes room climate control part of the planning. The rated operating range is 0 °C to 40 °C with 20% to 80% non-condensing humidity, and storage is rated from -15 °C to 55 °C. Confirm the room conditions with the SmartRooms Qatar team before placing the panel near a window or an unconditioned entrance.

Planning the installation and the discontinued status

The panel measures 1975 x 1208 x 113 mm and weighs 69.6 kg net, or 83.4 kg packed, so a wall mount must be rated for that load. It uses an 800 x 600 mm VESA pattern, and the box includes four M6 VESA screws, a mini PC bracket and three cable management hooks sized for this model. The manufacturer recommends installation by a qualified installer. SmartRooms Qatar offers free site surveys, which we suggest before any wall fixing because they confirm wall structure, cable routes and socket positions. Typical power draw is 189 W, and standby draw is 0.5 W or less. The source data does not list Energy Star certification for this 86-inch model, so check that requirement before a government tender.

Because the AP9-A86 is discontinued, a quotation is the best route to current stock or a compatible replacement. Request a quote with your room dimensions, the number of units and your deadline, and the SmartRooms Qatar team will reply, usually within one working day.

Questions about AP9-A86

What is the Promethean AP9-A86 and who should buy it?

The AP9-A86 is an 86-inch interactive display with a 3840 x 2160 4K UHD panel, 20 continuous touch points and an OPS slot for a plug-in computing module. It suits lecture halls, boardrooms and large training rooms where a group shares one screen. Because the manufacturer has discontinued it, most buyers today ask for a current equivalent instead.

Has Promethean discontinued the AP9-A86?

Yes. The manufacturer has discontinued this model and announced an end of sale. If you need an 86-inch class interactive display, or a compatible replacement for an existing ActivPanel 9 installation, request a quote from SmartRooms Qatar. Include the room size, the number of panels and the mounting method so the reply can match your requirement.

What resolution and brightness does the 86-inch model offer?

The panel runs at 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD) at 60 Hz across a display area of 1895 x 1066 mm. The rated brightness is 400 cd/m², with a 5000:1 dynamic and 1200:1 static contrast ratio. The viewing angle is 178 degrees, and the LED backlight is rated for 50,000 hours.

How accurate is the touch for classroom or meeting use?

The panel supports 20 continuous touch points with 1 mm touch accuracy, a 200 Hz scan rate and a 10 ms response time. Palm rejection and palm erase are included, and the two battery-less pens have a 3 mm tip. Pen and touch inputs are distinguished, so a teacher can write with a pen while resting a hand on the glass.

What does the OPS slot do, and how many ports are on the panel?

The single OPS slot takes a plug-in computing module, so a PC can sit inside the display rather than on a separate desk. On the connectivity side there are three HDMI 2.0 inputs, one HDMI 2.0 output, one DisplayPort 1.2 input, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port with 60 W Power Delivery, two RJ45 LAN ports at 1 Gbps and an RS-232 port.

Which operating systems and laptops can connect to it?

The source data lists compatibility with Windows 7 to 11, Mac OS 10.8 to 10.11, macOS Sierra 10.12.1 or later, Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome OS. The built-in ActivPanel OS is Android-based, and gestures and edge swipes are supported on Windows. Check your laptops and any OPS module against this list before ordering.

Will it fit a wall in a Doha boardroom?

The panel measures 1975 x 1208 x 113 mm and weighs 69.6 kg net, or 83.4 kg packed, so the wall and mounting hardware must carry that load. The VESA pattern is 800 x 600 mm, and the box includes four M6 screws. SmartRooms Qatar offers free site surveys, which we recommend before fixing a panel of this size to a wall in a West Bay or Lusail office.

What power does it need, and does it suit Qatar's mains supply?

The power rating is 100 V to 240 V AC, which covers Qatar's 240 V, 50 Hz mains. Typical consumption is 189 W for the 86-inch model, and standby draw is 0.5 W or less. The box includes a 3 m regional power cable. Confirm socket positions with the installer so cable runs stay tidy and safe.

Can it be used in a hot room or outdoors in summer?

The rated operating range is 0 °C to 40 °C with 20% to 80% non-condensing humidity, and storage is rated from -15 °C to 55 °C. Qatar summers regularly exceed 45 °C outdoors, so the panel should sit in an air-conditioned room that stays within the operating range. Check with the SmartRooms Qatar team before placing it in an unconditioned lobby or near a sun-facing window.

What is in the box with the AP9-A86?

The box contains the ActivPanel 9, a remote control with two batteries, two pens, a 3 m HDMI cable, a 3 m USB A-to-B cable, a 2 m USB-C cable, a 3 m regional power cable, a mini PC bracket with screws, four M6 VESA screws, three cable management hooks sized for the 86-inch model and a quick install guide. ActivInspire Professional is listed as included.

Is the 86-inch model Energy Star certified for a government office purchase?

The source data lists Energy Star certification as Yes for the 65-inch and 75-inch models but No for the 86-inch model. The listed regulatory certifications are CE, FCC, IC, UL, CUL, CB and RCM. If an energy label is a condition of your ministry or authority tender, ask SmartRooms Qatar to confirm the position before you submit the bid.

Can a private school in Al Rayyan buy several units through an LPO?

Yes. SmartRooms Qatar accepts purchase orders (LPOs) and government tenders, including Monaqasat, and accepts payment by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. For a school fitting out several large halls, send the list of rooms and their sizes so we can quote one batch. Availability is confirmed with the quotation, so plan site surveys and installation with that in mind.
