Name: Promethean ActivPanel 9 Premium AP9-B86 86-inch Interactive Display
Brand: Promethean
SKU: promethean-ap9-b86
Availability: Discontinued

Overview

The AP9-B86 is a discontinued 86-inch 4K interactive display from Promethean, and the manufacturer has announced end of sale. It offers a 3840 x 2160 TFT LCD with 400 cd/m² brightness, 20-point touch, an OPS slot and 8 GB RAM on ActivPanel OS. Qatar organisations that already own it, or need a large lecture hall or boardroom panel, can request a quote for a current equivalent or compatible replacement.

What the 86-inch AP9-B86 is and who it suits

The AP9-B86 is the largest model in the ActivPanel 9 Premium line, with an 86-inch 4K UHD screen at 3840 x 2160 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Its 1895 x 1066 mm display area gives a lecture hall or boardroom a writing surface that works for people seated far from the front. The manufacturer has discontinued this model and announced an end of sale, so this page is written for organisations that already own one, buyers comparing models, and anyone seeking a like-for-like replacement.

Display and touch performance for a large room

The panel is a TFT LCD with direct LED backlight and bonded glass. It is rated at 400 cd/m² brightness with a 5000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 1200:1 static, and an ambient light sensor adjusts output to the room. Its 1.07 billion colours (10-bit) and 178° viewing angle keep content readable from the back row. The 4 mm heat-tempered glass is anti-glare and anti-fingerprint, rated 9H pencil hardness, which matters in rooms with large windows or heavy daily use.

Touch performance is where this model stands out for teaching and meetings:

20 continuous touch points for several users writing at once
Touch accuracy of 1 mm with response of 5 ms or less
Palm rejection for writing and non-writing hands, plus palm erase
Two unique pen IDs with pen and touch differentiation
Four battery-less pens, a block eraser and an integrated full-length pen tray

Computing, connectivity and sound

The AP9-B86 runs ActivPanel OS, an Android-based system, with 8 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal storage and a quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 processor. A single OPS slot takes a slot-in computer module. The rear panel offers HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 inputs, DisplayPort 1.2, and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port with 100 W Power Delivery, plus gigabit RJ45 LAN in and out with Wake-on-LAN. Two 18 W front-facing speakers and a 15 W subwoofer provide built-in audio, and a microphone array supports calls. Wireless uses a Promethean Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module supplied in the box, supporting 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, and NFC is built in. It is compatible with Windows 7 to 11, macOS, Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome OS. ActivInspire Professional is included.

Where the AP9-B86 fits in Qatar

Three scenarios show where a panel this size makes sense. A university lecture hall in Education City, where students at the back need a clear view of slides and annotated notes. A ministry boardroom in West Bay, where teams work in Arabic and English in the same session and join colleagues abroad over video. A training centre in the Industrial Area or Al Sadd, where one large display replaces a projector and whiteboard in a mid-sized room.

The environment needs careful planning. The panel is rated for operating temperatures from 0°C to 40°C and 20% to 80% non-condensing humidity. Qatar summer temperatures can pass 45°C, so the room must be air-conditioned, the panel should not face direct sunlight through glazing, and it should not sit near unconditioned entrances. SmartRooms Qatar can review the room with you before installation.

Planning the installation: weight, mounting and power

The panel weighs 73.3 kg net and 95.7 kg packed, so plan for at least two people or lifting equipment. The VESA pattern is 800 x 600 mm. The box includes a wall mount, four M6 VESA screws, a mini PC bracket and cable management hooks, three of them sized for 86-inch models. Confirm wall structure and load before mounting, and book a free site survey with SmartRooms Qatar. The manufacturer requires installation by a qualified installer. The model accepts 100 to 240 V AC with a regional power cable supplied, draws 194 W typically, and uses 0.5 W or less on standby. Its fanless design keeps noise low in quiet rooms. The 86-inch model carries Energy Star certification, along with CE, FCC, UL and other listed certifications.

Ordering for your organisation

Schools, ministries and companies can order through a purchase order (LPO) or respond to government tenders, including Monaqasat, and pay by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. If you need a current equivalent or a compatible replacement for an AP9-B86 already in service, request a quote from SmartRooms Qatar. Quotations usually arrive within one working day. Send your room size, wall type and power details, and the team will prepare the options.

Questions about AP9-B86

Is the Promethean AP9-B86 still available from SmartRooms Qatar?

The manufacturer has discontinued the AP9-B86 and announced an end of sale. SmartRooms Qatar can quote for a current equivalent or a compatible replacement, matched to your room size, wall structure and software needs. Send us the model you have in mind and we will respond with a quotation, usually within one working day.

Who is an 86-inch panel like the AP9-B86 best suited to?

The 1895 x 1066 mm display area suits lecture halls, auditoriums, large boardrooms and training rooms where people sit several metres from the screen. Smaller classrooms and meeting rooms are often better served by a smaller panel. SmartRooms Qatar can help you choose the right size for the number of people in your room.

Can I wall-mount the AP9-B86 in a Doha office?

Yes. The box includes a wall mount, and the VESA pattern is 800 x 600 mm with four M6 screws. The panel weighs 73.3 kg net and 95.7 kg packed, so the wall structure must be checked before fixing. The manufacturer requires installation by a qualified installer, and SmartRooms Qatar offers professional installation after a free site survey.

How does summer heat in Qatar affect this panel?

The AP9-B86 is rated for operating temperatures from 0°C to 40°C and 20% to 80% non-condensing humidity. Qatar summer temperatures can exceed 45°C, so install it in an air-conditioned room, away from direct sun through windows and away from unconditioned entrances. Confirm the room conditions with the SmartRooms Qatar team during your site survey.

What power supply does the AP9-B86 need in Qatar?

The panel accepts 100 to 240 V AC, and a 3 m regional power cable is included. Typical consumption is 194 W, and standby draw is 0.5 W or less. Ask your electrician to confirm that the outlet and circuit are suitable before installation.

Which computers and operating systems work with it?

The panel is compatible with Windows 7 to 11, macOS, Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Chrome OS. It has an OPS slot for a slot-in computer module, and its rear USB-C port delivers 100 W Power Delivery, which suits charging a laptop while it is connected. HDMI and USB inputs cover most other sources.

How does wireless connectivity work?

Wi-Fi uses a Promethean Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module supplied in the box, with three antennae. It supports 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Wi-Fi 6 and dual band, plus Bluetooth 5.0. NFC is built in, and two NFC cards are included. Gigabit RJ45 LAN ports with Wake-on-LAN are available for wired networks.

What software and apps come with the AP9-B86?

ActivInspire Professional is included as the education software licence. The classroom apps include Explain Everything Whiteboard, Annotate, Timer, Spinner, Screen Capture, Screen Recording, Screen Share, Browser, PDF Reader and Media Player. Admin Tools, OTA updates, ActivSync and cloud-based user profiles are also supported.

How many people can write at the same time, and how does palm rejection work?

The touch layer supports 20 continuous touch points, so several people can write at once. Touch accuracy is rated at 1 mm, and palm rejection works for both writing and non-writing hands. Four battery-less pens and a block eraser are included, with two unique pen IDs to separate pen input from touch.

Is the AP9-B86 suitable for a school ordering several panels?

Yes. Schools and universities in Qatar can order several units against a purchase order (LPO) or respond to a government tender, including Monaqasat. Payment can be made by bank transfer, cheque or purchase order. Send a room list with each room's size and wall type so SmartRooms Qatar can quote the full order.

What is included in the box?

The box includes the panel, a remote control with batteries, four pens, a block eraser, a 3 m HDMI cable, a 3 m USB A-B cable, a 2 m USB-C cable, a 3 m regional power cable, a wall mount, a mini PC bracket, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module with antennae, two NFC cards, cable management hooks and a quick install guide.

Can I replace an existing AP9-B86 with a current model?

Yes. SmartRooms Qatar can quote for a current equivalent or a compatible replacement. Before ordering, compare the VESA pattern and weight with the new model, because the AP9-B86 uses an 800 x 600 mm pattern and weighs 73.3 kg net, so some brackets may need adjusting.
